A purported mobile bill of Rs 27,718 issued to a Reliance Jio customer in Kolkata went viral on social media which has created panic among users who are using free Jio services under its welcome offer.

The image of the bill doing rounds on social networks such as Twitter and Facebook, was issued to one Ayunuddin Mondal of Kolkata, who was asked to pay the bill by November 20, 2016, adding if paid after the said deadline, a late fee of Rs 1,100 would be levied.

The mobile number printed on the invoice however belonged to the Kolkata circle, but the phone was ‘switched off’ when contacted.

The origin of the bill is however unknown, and it was apparently meant to create panic among Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Jio users.

“The bill in circulation is fake. Currently, we are offering services under Jio welcome offer, and we reassure our existing customers as well as potential customers who subscribe to Jio connection till December 3 that benefits of free unlimited voice and data will be available to all till 31st December 2016,” a Jio spokesperson said.

The telecom arm of the oil-to-logistics conglomerate Reliance industries Limited (RIL) has enrolled as many as 2 crore subscribers in first-two months of the commercial rollout on September 5, 2016, with free unlimited voice and data under the welcome offer.

Reliance Jio is also expected to extend its ‘welcome offer’ till March 2017, according to some industry analysts.

“Mass scale free welcome offer could continue until March 2017 to attract subscriber growth towards the celebrated 100 million mark with RJio’s indicative data pricing at Rs 130-140 per gigabyte (GB),” Motilal Oswal analysts had earlier said.

The Mumbai-based telco is also rumoured to be announcing ‘something big’ on December 28, 2016, which some believe could be the extension of its current free services under the welcome offer.

Reliance Jio under its welcome offer provides
4G SIM with complementary access to unlimited HD voice, video calling, unlimited SMS, and access to Jio apps with unlimited high-speed data services.
