TALLINN, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- A gunman who fired shots and set off a bomb inside the Estonian Defense Ministry building in downtown Tallinn Thursday afternoon was shot dead by the police, a defense ministry spokesman said.

The man, an ex-soldier now working as a security guard, broke into the ministry at around 3 p.m. Thursday and fired several gun shots, sending many fleeing from the windows.

He then set off a bomb after trading fires with other guards at the building, and managed to take one of them hostage.

Earlier reports had said the gunman shot himself to death after being surrounded by the police, but Defense Ministry spokesman Alo Aulik confirmed Thursday in a press conference that the man was shot dead by the police.

Aside from the gunman, no one, including the hostage who was later released, had been hurt.

Police are currently investigating the motive of the attack.

Estonian Defense Minister Mart Laar was not in the ministry building when then shooting occured. Enditem
