Stats highlights from the second and third day's play from Chepauk:

9 KL Rahul became the ninth player to get dismissed for 199 in Tests. The other Indian batsman who came agonisingly close, only to get dismissed for 199 was Mohammad Azharuddin against Sri Lanka in Kanpur in 1986.

199 by Rahul is the second highest score for an Indian opening batsman against England after Sunil Gavaskar's 221 at the Oval in 1979. The previous highest in India was 192 by Budhi Kunderan at the Corporation Stadium in Chennai in 1964. It is also Rahuls personal best, eclipsing his 158 in Kingston this August.

152-run stand between Rahul and Parthiv Patel is the third-highest first-wicket stand for India against England after the 213 between Gavaskar and Chetan Chauhan at the Oval in 1979, and the 203 between Vijay Merchant and Syed Mushtaq Ali at the Old Trafford in 1936.

7 Rahul and Parthiv became the seventh pair for India to register a century partnership in their maiden innings together for the first wicket.

4 Test hundreds for Rahul and he has scored these in four countries Australia, Sri Lanka, West Indies and India. Ajinkya Rahane is the only other Indian batsman to score more with his first five hundreds coming in all different nations. The other Indian players with four each are Sandeep Patil, Wasim Jaffer and Shikhar Dhawan.

33 Innings since India last scored a hundred or more for the first wicket before today. The last pair to put a hundred-plus stand was Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan who scored 283 against Bangladesh in Fatullah in June 2015.

16 by Cheteshwar Puajra is his lowest first-innings score in 11 first-class matches this season. His previous scores read 166, 256*, 62, 87, 41, 93, 124, 199, 51 and 47.

9 Players scoring fifty batting at number eight on debut for England with Liam Dawson being the latest to join the list. 66* by him is the highest of the lot, eclipsing 59 by David Bairstow against England at the Oval in 1979.

6 This is the sixth instance of Englands number eight and nine batsmen scoring fifties in the same innings. The only other instance against India came at the Old Trafford in 1936 .

108 between Dawson and Adil Rashid is the third-highest eight-wicket stand for a visiting team in India, after 124 by Viv Richard and Keith Boyce in Delhi in 1974, and 112 by Imran Khan and Wasim Akram in Chennai in 1987.
