Stats highlights from the opening day's play in Mohali:

83 Test matches missed by Parthiv Patel since his last appearance in August 2008 in Sri Lanka - the most for an Indian player. He is playing after a gap of 3029 days - the longest break between Tests for an India player in the post-war era.

6 Number of times Alastair Cook has been dismissed by R Ashwin - the most a spinner has got him. Cook has faced 672 deliveries from Ashwin in 12 innings, scoring 286 runs at an average of 47.66. Nathan Lyon, who has dismissed Cook five times, is second on the list.

10 Fifty-plus scores for Bairstow in 2016 - the most by a wicketkeeper in a calendar year. He went past AB de Villiers's record of nine 50+ scores in 2013. However, he has failed to convert each of his last seven fifties to a three-figure score, with the 89 today being the highest.

15 Fifty-plus stands for the sixth wicket for England in 2016 - the joint-most for a team for any wicket in a calendar year. Australia also had 15 fifty-plus stands for the sixth wicket in 2005 from 28 innings.

89 by Bairstow is the fourth-highest for an England wicketkeeper in Tests in Asia. The higher scores are 96* by Alan Knott in Karachi in 1969, 92 by d*ck Spooner in Kolkata in 1951 and 91 by Matt Prior in Ahmedabad in 2012.

95 balls taken by Bairstow between his fifth (off 76th ball) and sixth (off 171st ball) boundaries. It is the longest sequence for him in a Test innings without a boundary.

184 Average for Bairstow against spinners this series. He fell to a spinner (Jayant Yadav) for the first time in the series, having scored 184 runs from 304 deliveries off them. In comparison, he has been dismissed by fast bowlers twice in 122 balls, scoring just 38 runs off them.

43 by Buttler is his highest score since the beginning of July 2015. His 12 innings before that fetched him 474 runs at 52.66 with five fifties. He scored only 156 runs at 13.00 in his next 12 with a highest of 42, which eventually led to his axing.

Ben Stokes reprimanded for breach of ICC Code of Conduct

England batsman Ben Stokes has been reprimanded by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for Level 1 breach of ICC Code of Conduct on the opening Day of the Mohali Test against India on Saturday (November 26).

According to an official release from the ICC, Stokes was found guilty of breaching Article 2.1.4 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to "using language or a gesture that is obscene, offensive or insulting during an International Match."

Stokes has also been handed a demerit point after the on-field umpires Marais Erasmus and Chris Gaffaney, and third umpire Kumar Dharmasena reported inappropriate comments made by him towards the celebrating Indian players after his dismissal in the second session.

Stokes admitted to the offence and there was no formal hearing.
