In Stats: Most Runs Scored in ODI Series & India’s Opening Plight - The Quint

Learning from mistakes has made me a better player: Hardik Pandya

prv_f3ccd_1485253540.jpg

Having been backed by the team management, Hardik Pandya, is fast rising amongst the ranks. Trusted by Virat Kohli to be India's solution to their perennial all-rounder woes, Pandya enjoyed a fine run in the recently concluded three-match One-Day International series against England, taking crucial wickets and making valuable runs.

The Baroda all-rounder on Tuesday (January 24) spoke to the media in Kanpur ahead of the first of three Twenty20 internationals against England.

There are a lot of new players who have come into this T20 series which includes youngsters and someone like Ashish Nehra. How do you adjust to a different bowling attack which is led by Nehra?

I don't think there will be any difference. Obviously, I have played with him (Nehra) and I am very confident. Individually, it doesn't make any difference when someone else comes into the team. It strengthens (Nehra's inclusion) the bowling attack very much.

How different is this T20 series considering we (India) have won the Test as well as the one-day series. How do you want to start with in the T20 series?

Obviously, we need to keep the basics pretty simple. We want to take confidence from the way we played in Tests and the One-Day Internationals (ODI). We want to win this series as well.

Do you find any difference between the captaincy of MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli?

I don't think so, both (Dhoni and Kohli) used to guide me, MS bhai used to give me a lot of confidence, as a bowler, as a batsman as well as a player. Virat bhai also does the same thing. I don't find any difference between the two. I am pretty happy with Virat's captaincy.

If we talk about the earlier version of Hardik Pandya to what you are now, you have worked closely with Rahul Dravid, tell us what you have learnt from him?

After the World Cup (T20 WC, 2016), I had a slight reality check. I knew I had areas to improve, the 'A' tour of Australia was pretty important for me. I learnt a lot of things about my game there, Rahul (Dravid) Sir helped me a lot, he spoke with me about my game as well as working on the mental aspects. Paras Sir (Mhambrey) helped me with my bowling and worked on my fitness. It was a complete package, my fitness, my bowling as well as the mental aspects of the game.

Are you the sort of individual who regrets playing some shots if it doesn't help your team win?

As an individual, I feel that we should all accept our mistakes and learn from it. If I don't accept my mistake, I will not improve in the next game. I shouldn't have played that shot (in the final ODI in Kolkata), but I felt the asking rate was climbing and someone had to take a chance. Kedar (Jadhav) was the one who would have stayed until the end and I was the one who should take the risks. In that process, I ended up getting out but I will hopefully rectify my mistake next time around and choose the right shot.

Looking ahead to the three T20Is and then the Champions Trophy, how important was this three-match ODI series for you?

It gives a lot of confidence when you are coming off a good series. As a player, it was important for me to believe that I belong here (Indian team). It was a pretty important series for me and thankfully it turned out to be a good series on an individual level.

India vs England ODIs: Top performers

India defeated England 2-1 in a tightly contested three-match one-day series, with 300-plus totals achieved in each of the six innings of the contest. Here’s a look at the top performers in the series.

Kedar Jadhav: Undoubtedly, the find of the series for India. He amassed 232 runs in three matches at an average of 77.33 and a strike rate of 144.09, with one fifty and one hundred. He began the series with a splendid 120 at Pune in a winning cause. After a nice cameo at Cuttack, he finished the series with a brilliant 90 at Kolkata, albeit in a losing cause in a close contest. His stand and deliver shots stood out.

Jason Roy: The England opener was consistency personified and was among the main reason why the team got off to great starts. He was England’s top run-getter in the series with 220 runs from three games at an average of 73.33, and a strike rate of 115.78 with fifties in all the matches. He contributed 73 at Pune, 82 at Cuttack and 65 at Kolkata, reiterating why he is so highly rated. While the first two knocks were in losing causes, the final innings came in a winning cause.

Ben Stokes: The all-rounder was in fine form in the series, contributing with both bat and ball. He hit 120 runs in three games at a wonderful strike rate of 146.34. Stokes hit 62 from 40 in the opening ODI at Pune and an unbeaten 57 from 39 in the third ODI. Stokes also starred with the ball in the final match. He finished with 3 for 63, claiming the big wickets of Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya. Stokes was deservedly the man of the match at Kolkata.

Virat Kohli: The Indian skipper was again among the runs. He finished the series with 185 runs at an average of 61.66 with one hundred and one fifty, at a strike rate of 106.93. Kohli hit 122 in the opening ODI. After failing in the second match, he finished the series with 55. Considering the high standards he sets for himself, Kohli would be slightly disappointed.

Hardik Pandya: He did a great job as an all-rounder. Batting lower down the order, he smashed 115 runs in 89 balls at a strike rate of 129.21. He hit an unbeaten 40 in the first match and a well-compiled 56 in the third match. Even in the second ODI, he was unbeaten on 19. Pandya was incisive with the ball as well. He claimed 2 for 46 in the first game and 3 for 49 in the third.

Yuvraj Singh: The 35-year-old made an impressive comeback into the Indian team. He ended the series with 210 runs at an average of 70 and a strike rate of 107.14. Yuvraj smashed a career-best 150 in the second ODI at Cuttack, and came up with a fluent 45 in the final match at Eden Gardens. One must say it was a successful return for the southpaw from Punjab.
