Ind vs Eng: Kohli hundred powers India to 8-wicket victory over England

NEW DELHI: Short of plopping into a sofa in their living rooms, Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir couldn't have been any more comfortable at home than they were at the Ferozeshah Kotla on Monday.

Like pukka Delhiites, they played by the numbers, an assured ease and a calculated approach to help India overhaul England's 238-target with surprising ease. Kohli, in particular, made another strong claim for a berth in the Test squad for the upcoming series against the West Indies with an unbeaten 98-ball 112, a knock head and shoulders above the rest of the batting competition from either side. The runs have been coming at such fair clip it's hard to believe this feisty young batsman is already seven ODI centuries old.

India will also welcome Gambhir's return to international form following injury and the painful incidents of the England tour. He played excellent senior statesman with a fluent, unbeaten 84, trademark whips, cuts and steers in place as Kohli flicked, drove and pulled with elan at the other end.

Gambhir, Kohli were brilliant: Dhoni

Indian skipper M.S. Dhoni, wearing a broad smile, praised the performance of the youngsters after the second successive win in the ODI series against England.

Dhoni was particularly happy about the unbeaten third-wicket partnership between Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli which ensured a smooth eight-wicket victory.

“We did not have to chase too much. It (England's 237) was a slightly under-par score. The partnership between Gautam and Virat was brilliant,” said Dhoni.

He stressed the need for century-maker Kohli to be more consistent and learn to convert his starts into big scores. “He is going through that phase. He is improving,” said the Indian captain.

Dhoni was satisfied with the team's run-chasing ability. “We have been able to chase slightly difficult targets. We are improving while chasing,” he said.
Super-sopper!

Impressed with the use of three super-soppers at the Ferozeshah Kotla to absorb the dew, Dhoni said the “wet ball” was responsible for India's plight in the rain-affected matches in England as the spinners could not grip the ball properly.

England skipper Alastair Cook admitted that it was a “concern” for his team to “lose heavily twice in a row.”

We have the self-belief to make a comeback, says Cook

Pushed on the backfoot by two heavy defeats against India, England captain Alastair Cook reckons that he has "got the right players" to stage a turnaround in the ODI series and it was just a case of the team not performing to potential. "After two heavy defeats, there is bound to be some questions a
sked about the team. We have the self-belief and there is no reason why we can't do it here," Cook told reporters after England suffered an eight-wicket defeat in the second one-dayer on Monday.

"The conditions here are different, and it played a big role in today's game. It was hard to stop (Virat) Kohli and (Gautam) Gambhir once they got going. They really played well to take the game away from us," he said.

Cook said that his team has prepared well for the series by coming to India well in advance but the players have not been able to carry their recent form into these games.

"We do have the players to do well in these conditions. There are no major changes in the team. It is just that we are not being able to deliver," he said.

Cook admitted that the two huge defeats will put some doubts in the mind on whether changes are required in the playing combination to be able to put it across the hosts.

"There will be questions. We have got the skills. We were a little short on the basics in the first two matches and we paid a price", he explained.

"In today's game, we did not start well after winning the toss. We just could not recover. We have to face it that we did not play well enough," he said.

The English captain had words of praise for paceman Vinay Kumar who bowled "really well" and gave his time vital breakthroughs.

"Vinay bowled really well. He bowled in the right areas and it worked. He kept it simple, that's it", he said.

Cook said it will be a challenge for him to keep his team in the right frame of mind for the do-or-die game in Mohali on October 20.

"It will be a challenge to make sure that everyone is in the right frame of mind. We have to do well in Mohali," he added.

Batsman Robin Uthappa was recalled to the India squad for the lone Twenty20 against England while selectors retained the same set of players for the three remaining one-day internationals.

Gautam Gambhir, who will miss the Oct 29 match in Kolkata's Eden Gardens due to his wedding, and left-handed opener Parthiv Patel were left out of the squad.

The 25-year-old Uthappa, a key member of India's Twenty20 World Cup-winning side in 2007, has played 38 ODIs and nine T20 matches for his country, the last of which was in July 2008.

Another big-hitting batsman, Yusuf Pathan, who was dropped after India's tour of the West Indies earlier this year, was also recalled to the 15-man squad.

India lead the five-match ODI series against England 2-0 with three more matches to be played in Mohali (Oct 20), Mumbai (Oct 23) and Kolkata (Oct 25).

Wanted to get Indian players out of their comfort zones: Patel

2udyuls.jpg

England's left-arm spinner of Indian origin Samit Patel has admitted that on-field verbal duels with Indian players have continued from the last series. There were a few altercations between several England players and Indian batsmen Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir during the second ODI in Delhi.

Patel was quoted by The Sun newspaper that they will carry on sledging in an attempt to "get the Indians out of their comfort zone."

But the British paper admitted that this "tactic backfired badly in Delhi as India stormed to their second crushing win of the series."

Patel said: "It carried on from the England series back home. Guys don't forget and I'm sure the Indians have had a bit of stick after we beat them 3-0. I don't think they were particularly happy with the way they played in England and they're trying to show us why."

The portly spinner also added: "I'm sure they love to give it out, so they can take a bit from us. We wanted to play a positive game of cricket and we didn't leave anything on the park.

"We want to get them out of their comfort zones. No one likes to target India in India because of the crowds and our guys would like to do that. England teams who have been here in the past have taken a backward step. I love the fact that our guys are taking it to them."

Mohali track should make visitors happy

After being battered and bruised in the first two matches, England team will have a realistic chance of making a comeback in the series on the pacy PCA Stadium wicket. The likes of Steven Finn, Jade Dernbach and Tim Bresnan should find the deck to their liking. Traditionally the most
pace-friendly pitch in the sub-continent, PCA curator Daljit Singh is confident there will be plenty to keep the pacers on both sides interested.

"All I can say is it will be a good one-day wicket. It should have good pace and bounce all through the match. The ball might do a bit under the lights and the dip in temperature might also help that in the later part of the innings."

This will surely be welcomed by England, who have till now struggled to control the flow of runs. Both Finn and Bresnan can prove dangerous on a lively wicket in early winter conditions. "We will be leaving a good grass cover on it," Daljit said.

South Africa played Netherlands in the World Cup on the pitch and scored 351 runs, the highest total at the venue.

India will bank on their medium pacers Vinay Kumar and Umesh Yadav, who showed better control on the more benign Ferozshah Kotla pitch with Vinay taking a career-best 4- 30.

Daljit warned that dew can play a part in the game and bowlers might struggle for grip.

"We will take measures and use ASPA-80 spray to negate the dew's effect. But with two new balls being used the teams will have to protect a ball only for 25 overs, which to an extent might help negate the effect for the team bowling second."
