Yuvraj Singh, Gautam Gambhir, Suresh Raina named captains of Duleep Trophy teams

Senior cricketers Yuvraj Singh, Gautam Gambhir and Suresh Raina will lead India Red, India Blue and India Green teams respectively in the Duleep Trophy to be played at Greater Noida International Cricket Stadium from August 23 to September 14.

The four-day tournament will be played for the first time with pink ball and under lights.

The selection of Yuvraj, Raina and pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who will play for India Green, raises serious questions over their participation in the two Twenty20 matches against West Indies in Florida, USA on August 27 and 28 as the games clashes with the dates of Duleep Trophy.

All three players Yuvraj, Raina and Bumrah were part of India’s ICC Twenty20 World Cup earlier this year.

Wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik and Test specialist Cheteshwar Pujara, who is witnessing a poor run of form in the ongoing West Indies tour, will play under Gambhir in the India Blue team while veteran off-spinner Harbhajan Singh and Murali Vijay will play for India Green side.

Harbhajan Singh likely to miss Duleep Trophy, in UK with family

India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh is likely to miss the upcoming Duleep trophy tournament due to family commitments. Harbhajan who was recently blessed with a baby girl has planned to spend some time with his wife and newly born daughter in United Kingdom.

“Harbhajan’s daughter is not even a month old. It is quite natural that he needs to be with his wife and daughter at this point of time. Family is always the top most priority. He is currently in the United Kingdom with his family,” a BCCI source close to the development told PTI on condition of anonymity.

This is the inaugural instance where the elite tournament will be played with a pink ball and under flood lights and the spin maestro of Indian cricket team was drafted in India Green team which would be led by Suresh Raina.

The tournament will take place in Greater Noida.

Harbhajana Singh, Suresh Raina, Gautam Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh have been the real attraction to this new format of the game but the Punjab off-spinner will now be out of action.

While Raina will have to captain the India Green side, it would be Yuvraj Singh and Gautam Gambhir who will have responsibility of leading India Red and Blue respectively.

Apart from Bhajji, the likes of Ajinkya Rahane and Shikhar Dhawan will also be out of sight from the domestic tournament as the two Indian batsmen would be with Indian T20 team that will be playing two T20Is against West Indies in Florida.

The T20I team will be led by MS Dhoni .
