Depends on an individual. I myself have 4 numbers:
  • One that I only give for calling and WhatsApp
  • One that I give to verified Bank, Amazon and aadhaar
  • One where all spam calls go
  • One bsnl backup in case I go to an area without coverage of Airtel or jio
For that you can specially apply for a sim staying the reason you want. The current method of providing SIMs are completely dangerous.

Yes @iDJ go for MNP you'll simply get your sim register under your name.
But as you suggested this must be an option where by simply going to company office with a guy who owns our simcard and get registered to "no objection certificate". And, sim is simply transfer to user name.
Or when parents are buying sim card they register sim card under joint indentity so when child grows up he/she could easily access to it's sim.
 
I already touched this number 😜 in Jio I can't buy a single sim from Jio anymore.
