Vodafone India and Bharti Airtel extended the deadline for their subscribers to pay mobile phone bills by three days due to the government's move to take Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes out of circulation.

In a message to its users, Vodafone India, the country's No. 2 telco, said it had extended the bill due date to November 15, 2016.

Airtel, India's No. 1 telco, advanced the same facility to its users.

"We are extending bill payment due date for postpaid customers by upto 3 days and will provide some talk time/data loan to prepaid customers to ensure there is continuity of services and they are not inconvenienced," an Airtel spokesperson said in a statement.

The move by the two telcos comes after government banned use of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes from midnight of November 8, Tuesday. While currency of Rs 100 and lower is being allowed for transactions, users having notes of higher value would have to deposit them back to their accounts through banks or post offices. Against the deposits, withdrawals of up to Rs 10,000 a day or Rs 20,000 a week will be allowed.

The government has closed banks for November 9 and cash dispensing ATMs for November 9 and 10, while withdrawals will be limited till November 11 to Rs 2,000. Notes currently in use can be traded for up to Rs 4,000 till November 24, and for larger amounts thereafter.

The sudden late-night developments on Tuesday were aimed at fighting unaccounted cash or black money in the system, the government said, but left consumers in the cold who would now have to conserve low value cash to buy goods of daily need.

People will get new Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 notes, cleared by the Reserve Bank of India, from November 10.
