Banks get $44 billion of old-currency notes in four days

Indian banks received 3 trillion rupees ($44.4 billion) of 500- and 1,000-rupee notes over the last four days, the Finance Ministry said on Sunday, after the government announced it would withdraw such bills to crack down on corruption.

The government also relaxed cash withdrawal limits including removing a per-day cap of 10,000 rupees, increasing the weekly limit to 24,000 rupees from 20,000 and allowed exchange of bills over the counter at banks to reach 4,500 rupees instead of 4,000.

From automated teller machines, individuals will now be able to take out up to 2,500 rupees of cash per day instead of 2,000 rupees per day, the ministry said in a statement.

These relaxations came as public anger increased due to a lack of access to accounts, as well as over the non-functioning of ATMs not yet reconfigured for the new series of smaller 2,000-rupee bills.

At banks they are telling that...

You can deposit any amount in your bank account...

But you can only exchange Rs.4000/one day...

But after that when we go to bank another day..

They're saying that - you already exchanged Rs
4000 once & can't take another time.....

Exchange can only be done once in SBI, not multiples times on different days.

Demonetisation Effect: Parking Fee at Airports Waived For a Week

Government on Monday said parking charges at airports across country are being waived till the midnight of November 21, as people continue to face difficulties in tendering change following the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes.

The directive would be applicable on both Airports Authority of India (AAI) as well as privately operated aerodromes.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation has decided to suspend the collection of parking charges at all airports till November 21 midnight, an official release said. It will take effect from midnight on Monday.

This step has been taken to facilitate the smooth movement of passengers, the ministry said.

There are 75 operational airports including six run under joint ventures.

According to AAI, the decision not to charge any car parking fee for seven days has been taken in view of the demonetisation of currency and crisis of smaller denominations.

"AAI as per the government guidelines has decided not to charge any car parking fee for seven days starting from midnight tonight," an AAI official said.

Details regarding financial compensation to private entities running parking areas at airports would be decided later, the official added.

Nearly a week after the government withdrew Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes as part of a crackdown against black money and corruption, queues outside banks and ATMs have only gotten longer.

Against this backdrop, the Finance Ministry on Monday began a daily review exercise to assess problem areas and put in place remedial measures.

Demonetisation: Railways to accept Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes till Nov 24

Railways on Monday extended the use of defunct Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes, which have been demonetised by the Modi government, to purchase tickets and for onboard catering till November 24.

The government had earlier allowed use of the old currency at government hospitals, railway ticketing, public transport, airline ticketing at airports, milk booths, crematoria/burial grounds and petrol pumps till November 11 which was extended to November 14 and now further extended to November 24.

The use of demonetised currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 denomination was extended up to November 24 tonight, and all concerned have been instructed to comply with the latest instruction, according to a senior Railway Ministry official.

However, the precautionary measures, like refund of cancelled tickets would be done through ticket deposit receipts (TDR) and not in cash among others, would continue, he added.
The railways had announced stop giving refund for cancellation of tickets in cash and instead issuing ticket deposit receipts (TDR).

In case of refund amount touching Rs 10,000 or above, the Railways will only transfer the amount to the customer's bank account and the person concerned is required to furnish account details for receiving the amount while cancelling the ticket.
