JAKARTA: A strong 6.6-magnitude
earthquake hit Indonesia's Molucca
Sea today, the US Geological Survey
said, but no tsunami alert was
issued and there were no reports of
damage.
The quake struck at a depth of 41
kilometres (25 miles), 134 kilometres
northwest of Kota Ternate at 0342
IST yesterday, the USGS said.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center
said there was no tsunami threat.
Hendra Rahman, an official from
Indonesia's meteorology, climatology
and geophysics agency, said the
quake was felt moderately in
Manado, on Sulawesi island, and on
the island of Ternate.

New Delhi: The ban on the telecast
of controversial BBC documentary
"India's Daughter" on the December
16, 2012, gang-rape will continue,
the Delhi High Court ordered on
Wednesday and asked the central
government to place before it the
advisory issued by it to prohibit
exhibition of the documentary.
A division bench of Chief Justice G
Rohini and Justice RS Endlaw posted
for April 15 the two public interest
litigations (PILs) before it for
revocation of the ban on the
documentary's telecast.

NEW DELHI: Faced with stiff
opposition on the land bill, the
government on Thursday reached out
to leaders of opposition parties,
including Sonia Gandhi, and activist
Anna Hazare inviting them to an
open debate on the issue while
asserting that the bill was "very
much in farmers' interest".
In a letter to Congress president
Sonia Gandhi, leaders of other
opposition parties and social activist
Anna Hazare, Union transport and
shipping minister Nitin Gadkari said
the government was willing to
debate all aspects of the bill
which is awaiting clearance in the
Rajya Sabha.
 
NEW DELHI: Supreme Court on
Thursday extended the anticipatory
bail granted to Teesta Setalvad and
her husband in a case related to
alleged misuse of funds meant for
Gujarat riots victims.
A bench of Justices Dipak Misra and
AK Goel referred the case to a larger
bench saying the issue required a
harmonious construction between
regulated freedom and non-
cooperation of accused in the
investigations.
The top court said the interim stay
on the couple arrest as ordered on
Feb 19 will stay till further orders.

million barrels of Iraqi oil to fill its
first strategic petroleum reserve
(SPR), taking advantage of cheap
prices and lending some support to
a market suffering from oversupply.
India's SPR purchases could
temporarily help offset the impact of

of spring maintenance at Asian
refiners.
