At Rs 600 per dose, Indians getting inoculated with Covishield at private hospitals from May 1 could end up paying the highest price in the world for this vaccine developed by the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca.

This, despite it being contract-manufactured by Pune’s Serum Institute of India whose CEO Adar Poonawalla had said that the firm was making a profit even at a price of Rs 150 per dose.

In fact, Poonawalla also floated the Rs 1,000 per dose ($13) rate after the first shipment went out telling ANI: “We have given a special price of Rs 200 for the first 100 million doses only to the Government of India… and, after that, we will be selling at Rs 1,000 in private markets.”

If states can't afford to buy it. Citizens would be required to pay from their own pocket. I don't think that would be the case. But I have a feeling that state government opting for Covaxin or Sputnik instead of Covishield.

Sputnik Might be around 800rs. "While the global price for the Sputnik V vaccine is $10 per dose, we are still in discussions on the price of the imported doses in India. We will share an update once there are further developments in this regard," Dr Reddy's said in a statement

Can someone please explain what Ministry of Health is trying to say here?

This is my understanding from Poonawala interview:
1)Govt. of India would get the vaccine for price of Rs 150 for existing order.
2)The New order would be state/Center at Rs400/Dose.
3)SII hasn't fulfilled contract signed with various international govt's and is contractually bound to supply the vaccine to these Nations at pre decided rate.
4)SII got no support from Govt. support from Indian govt. for its R&D for Covax vaccine.
5)SII pays AstraZenca almost 50% royalty money.

I hope douchebags do not project Poonawala as some kind of money sucker. He is running a business yes but he is probably doing more for the country more than these douchebags would combinedly do in their lifetime.

PS:if State government can offer cycles and laptopns/gold jewellery during elections ,i am sure 2 doses of vaccine even it costs Rs 400/dose is manageable.

Moreover the EXPERTS quickly forget that producing more vaccines would require capital expenses from SII which they will ofcourse factor in vaccine pricing.

Poor Poonawala has to give clarification again because a bunch of good for nothing wannabe socialists and an ill informed newspaper think that he is exploiting India :(
That clarification is not very clarifying.
He said he was making profit at even at 150/dose....and this is a freaking emergency. 600rs is justifiable?
The central govt said it will still procure at 150 even after he said new orders are rs 400 for both center and state. Any clarification on that?
What happened to free vaccine for all promise by dr.harshvardhan...why was he a wannabe socialist then?
If there ever was a case for socialism ...a pandemic is one!
