Students of Gadag have reason to rejoice as browsing the internet, downloading files and chatting will be free of cost, with BSNL installing Wi-Fi hotspots all over the the city.

With this, Gadag becomes the first city in the state to have the widest free Wi-Fi cover. Utilizing funds from the Gadag-Betageri city municipal council, Gadag Urban Development Authority (GUDA) and Karnataka Legislators' Local Area Development (KLLAD), deputy commissioner Prasanna Kumar took the initiative to make Gadag the first city with free Wi-Fi cover.

The service was officially launched in Gadag on Wednesday. Users get 200 MBfree every day, and 350-400 people can avail of the service, sources said.

"The individual user will get up to 2mbps speed and 200MB every day. Each access point can support 300-400 users. All social websites will be accessible. Free Wi-Fi services are expected to increase people's participation in governance and will be particularly beneficial for students," he added.

According to sources, these spots are mainly government office premises, bus termini, zoo, among other areas. Wi-Fi is already available in some areas, and soon, all 25 locations will be covered.

Gadag, which lies on the way to tourist spots like Hampi, Hospet, Lakkundi draws many visitors. Free Wi-Fi hotspot service will definitely help tourists too, said Sudhirsingh Ghorpade, an advocate in Gadag.

"It's the Centre's Digital India initiative which aims to make government services available to citizens electronically by reducing paperwork," he added.

On Day One of the launch, 921 people of Gadag city availed of the facility. They used around 139.19 GB data on the first day, of which 40 MBalone was used by government hostel students, said sources.

The Arunachal Pradesh government is contemplating to provide free Wi-Fi hotspots at all important public places in the state capital from Chimpu in Itanagar to Kankar Nallah in Naharlagun.

Chief minister Kalikho Pul hoped internet connectivity would benefit the students most as there were a number of reference books, online help centres and experts' views available, which can make the learning process easy, an official release said here on Monday.

It would also help local business and farmers who could use Internet to understand the market and predict weather trends in a better way.

The measure would be in line with the Prime Minister's ambitious 'Digital India' programme that aims at boosting Internet connectivity across the country.

The department of information technology would implement the service in select public places. The bandwidth service for the Wi-FI hotspots would be provided by the state-owned BSNL or some other private service provider.

Public-sector BSNL is all set to set launch 1000 high-speed Wi-Fi hotspots across the state to address the challenges posed by its absence in the 4G data services. Kerala Circle CGM of BSNL, R Mani told reporters here that the proposed hotspots would provide 4.5G speed and it would be commissioned within a months’ time. Huge cost to buy the 4G spectrum was the hindrance for the state-run service provider to plunge into 4G service but it is expected to happen by this March, he noted.

“In between, we are launching about 1000 Wi-Fi hotspots in the state which will give 4.5G speed. This will give better speed than 4G. This is going to happen within a month,” he said. Mani was speaking on the sidelines of the Kerala Circle launch of ‘SBI Mobicash,’ a prepaid virtual mobile wallet on mobile phones powered by BSNL. “Equipment have been dispatched. We have already identified the sites. Wherever our 3G tower experiences a lot of traffic, we are putting up the wifi hot spot,” he said.

With the commissioning of the hotspots, when a customer is using his mobile phone, his network service would be directly taken over to the wifi hotspot. “Then, he will not be on 3G… but will be on 4.5G,” he added. The much-awaited project is being implemented in collaboration with the equipment from L&T. The official said though the 4G launch of BSNL is delayed, it would surely happen soon. “The tender has already been floated for 4G.
It is under evaluation in Delhi. To ask for so much money from the government to buy spectrum is the big issue with the BSNL. And this is what delayed our 4G launch. But it is sure to come,” he added.

The rollout of 1,000 Wi-Fi hotspots in Kerala is a part of an effort to provide Wi-Fi hotspots all across the country. In 2015 it was announced that BSNL would be investing 7,000 Crores to set up Wi-Fi hotspots across the country over the course of two to three years. BSNL has partnered with QuadGen Wireless to set up Wi-Fi hotspots in south and west zones under a revenue sharing model.

BSNL plans to set up 40,000 Wi-Fi hotspots across the country by the year 2018. BSNL already offers Wi-Fi services in tourists places such as the Taj Mahal, Khajuraho and Varanasi. The first 30 minutes of Wi-Fi connectivity is free, after which users will have to pay between Rs 20 to Rs 70 for access between half an hour to a day. The free thirty minute access is provided three times a month per user.

Facebook has sponsored 100 hotspots across the country in partnership with BSNL. The social media company is paying BSNL Rs 5 lakh per hotspot per annum. There is no revenue sharing agreement with Facebook, and Facebook is sponsoring the hotspots. The hotspots are set up with the BSNL selected partner Quad Zen. The current agreement has a duration of three years, and it can be extended by a further two years.

Recently, BSNL has partnered with Tata Communications to provide BSNL customers access to 44 million Wi-Fi hotspots globally . The hotspots allow seamless and automatic connectivity for BSNL customers with international roaming, and are an effort to save data costs on behalf of the customers. BSNL is the first among Indian telecom operators to provide Wi-Fi hotspots for international roaming. Closer back home, BSNL is in the process of testing high speed hotspots in over 1 lakh villages .

State-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. ( BSNL ) has awarded a contract worth Rs 1,000 crore to a Larsen & Toubro-led consortium to set up more than 35,000 public Wi-Fi hotspots by March 2018.

“We have decided to roll out phase two of the programme through our own capex (capital expenditure) model to deploy 35,500 Wi-Fi hotspots across the country by March 2018,” BSNL Chairman Anupam Shrivastava told ET.

The contract was awarded through a recent open tendering process, according to BSNL. The company aims to offer data services through these hotspots at speeds faster than those offered over fourth-generation (4G) technology.

L&T together with UTStarcom , Elitecore and
Cisco will provide hardware solutions. Equipment has been procured and installation is expected to start this month, according to Shrivastava.

The company set up 4,500 Wi-Fi hotspots in the first phase of the programme through a revenue-sharing model with local partners and systems integrators.

“We have successfully installed 4,500 Wi-Fi hotspots to test the technology. Data sessions of our mobile customers can be transferred
seamlessly to Wi-Fi network which works as a 4G hotspot,” Shrivastava said.

San Jose-based Cisco Systems will install access points for the initiative, while Elitecore, a part of the Pune-based Sterlite Technologies, will provide the service management platform, which includes data analytics to help the telco run advertisements from local merchants to generate revenue.

The Wi-Fi programme is one of BSNL’s major thrust areas as it seeks to take steps to digitally transform the country to allow 1.3 billion Indians with affordable internet access.
