Bharti Airtel , India's leading telecom operator is in the final stages of discussions with
Tikona Digital Networks to buy the latter’s 4G spectrum for Rs 800-1,000 crore, Mint reported.

The report said that Tikona has some debt on its books which Airtel will assume, increasing the overall deal value to Rs1,500-1,700 crore. The deal will be split into multiple tranches, it added.

Tikona has airwaves in the 2300 MHz band, which it bought in the 2010 auctions in Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, UP (East), UP (West) and Rajasthan for over Rs 1,058 crore. The Mumbai-based internet service provider is currently running a commercial pilot to offer high-speed broadband services in a handful of cities, including Varanasi, targeting home and enterprise users.

The report added that Tikona is hiving off its wireless broadband business, Tikona WiBro, which it will continue to run independently.

The deal will allow Bharti Airtel to increase its capacity to offer data services to customers. It will also help Airtel get pan-India 4G coverage in 2,300 MHz band...it will help Airtel fill the gaps in 2,300 MHz.

The development comes just after Airtel's annoucemnt of Telenor India acqusition . The acquistion will allow Airtel to strengthen its presence in the 1,800 MHz band, and it will give Airtel access to 44 million customers 43.4 MHz of spectrum in the 1,800MHz band and 20,000 base stations.

Bharti Airtel to acquire Tikona Networks’ 4G business

Bharti Airtel, the country’s largest operator by users, has signed a definitive agreement with Tikona Digital Networks to acquire its 4G business, including the Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) spectrum and 350 sites in five telecom circles.

The acquisition is subject to requisite regulatory approvals, the company said in a statement. However, the financial details of the transaction were not immediately disclosed.

“Airtel’s continued focus on strengthening its 4G capabilities across multiple spectrum bands will be complemented with the BWA spectrum acquisition from Tikona. We believe that combining our capacities in TD-LTE and FD-LTE will further bolster our network, and help us provide unmatched high-speed wireless broadband experience to our customers. We remain committed to our vision of leading India’s digital revolution by offering world-class and affordable telecom services through a robust spectrum portfolio spread across multiple bands,” Gopal Vittal, MD & CEO (India & South Asia), Bharti Airtel, said.

Tikona currently has 20 MHz spectrum in the 2300 MHz band in Gujarat, UP (East), UP (West), Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh circles. Airtel plans to roll-out high speed 4G services on the newly-acquired spectrum in the five circles immediately after the closure of the transaction.

As per the agreement, the acquisition of the 4G business in Gujarat, UP (East), UP (West) and Himachal Pradesh will be undertaken by Airtel, while in the Rajasthan circle, it will be accomplished through Airtel’s subsidiary Bharti Hexacom Limited. Post-acquisition, the combined spectrum holding of Airtel in these five circles will be within the spectrum caps prescribed by the Government.
