Steven O’Keefe, Peter Nevill re-write history books
Australia might have lost the 1st Test match in Pallekele, but that didn’t stop Steven O’Keefe and Peter Nevill from placing their names in the history books. Soon after Rangana Herath ripped apart the Australian batting line up with his figures of 5/54 in the second innings, the late middle order was exposed to the mountain of a run chase. But tail-end batsman O’Keefe and wicket keeper Nevill came up with a tough resistance which would etch their names in history.
Their long-standing partnership on the final day of the Test match was futile, but brave. They might not have saved the day for the visitors, but made things a little bit frustrating for the Lankan bowlers.
Both hailing from New South Wales, the pair came out on the crease when Australia were tottering at 157/8. The victory mark wasn’t impossible as the target put on by Sri Lanka batsmen was 268. A quick fall of wickets upfront dismantled the hopes for Kangaroos.
O’Keefe, who has been already ruled out for the remainder of the series after suffering a hamstring injury, came to take the crease with Nevill on the other end. Running between the wickets wasn’t an option and defence became the only surviving strategy for the duo. Bad weather and poor lighting had already taken a toll on the Test match, but the partnership kept going.
They put up just 4 runs from 178 deliveries at a run rate of 0.13 an over, including a record 28.4 consecutive overs without scoring. Their partnership lasted for 90 minutes. That means only four runs were scored in an entire session.
The previous slowest partnership record was of 0.64 runs per over between South African stars Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers against India in 2015.
Australian captain Steven Smith hailed O’Keefe and Nevill’s record breaking partnership.
“I was really proud of the way Peter Nevill and Stephen O’Keefe fought hard at the end,” captain Smith said in the press conference.
“It wasn’t easy, some balls were skidding, some were spinning, but it was difficult and they found a way to get through it.
“If Steve was able to run we would have scored a few runs there as well.”
Australia will next play Sri Lanka at Galle in the 2nd Test match, starting August 4.
