India's tour of NZ next year to be trimmed: Report
March 01, 2013 20:39 IST

India's [ Images ] full tour of New Zealand [ Images ] early next year could be trimmed to two Tests, two ODIs and two T20 Internationals to accommodate the Asia Cup cricket tournament, according to a report.

The ICC's [ Images ] Future Tours Programme (FTP) has India scheduled to play three Tests, five ODIs and a single T20 International in February-March, but the BCCI wanted to trim down the tour to host the Asia Cup around that time.

According to Cricinfo, the new trimmed schedule will have a maximum of 14 days of international cricket against the 21 originally planned in the FTP, though no formal agreement has been reached between the two Boards yet.

The report said that Nimbus [ Get Quote ], the owners of NEO, which has bagged the broadcast rights of the tour, was made aware of a possible change in the original itinerary for the New Zealand tour. The Asia Cup will also be broadcast by NEO.

Nimbus announced two days ago that it would broadcast to India all international cricket from New Zealand till 2020.

For NZC though, it is a matter of relief that there would be no cancellation of the tour because of India's tight schedule, the report said.

There was concern over the tour being called off but several months of negotiations between the two Boards -- including one-on-ones at ICC meetings -- ensured an amicable arrangement for all parties.

It is, however, not yet known if the BCCI will compensate the NZC for trimming down the tour, the report said.

Dhoni is the best person to lead India, says Laxman
Last updated on: March 01, 2013 22:23 IST

It was one of the most unpleasant episodes in the recent history of Indian cricket.

And it involved two of its most high-profile names.

Rahul Dravid's [ Images ] sudden retirement last year, coupled with his own poor form, meant there was mounting pressure on VVS Laxman [ Images ] to call curtains on his international career.

Frustrated by the continuous speculation, the veteran batsman announced a sudden retirement, two days before he was supposed to take the field against New Zealand [ Images ] on his home ground.

Laxman's surprise decision gave rise to conspiracy theories that he had been forced to make the announcement because his equation with captain MS Dhoni [ Images ] had worsened.

Though the two players refrained from making comments against each other at the time, the tension was obvious.

The episode marked an unfortunate end to what had been an illustrious career.

Six months later, though, Laxman is happily retired and prefers not to talk about the episode. Neither is there any animosity towards India's [ Images ] captain.

"Dhoni and I are friends," said Laxman, on the sidelines of a function in Hyderabad.

"He is an amazing person and a very good captain," he added.

Dhoni, till recently, was criticised for his captaincy, following Team India's poor run of form, with many calling for his resignation.

Laxman, however, refused to buy the argument, saying there is no alternative available to the incumbent.

"Dhoni is the best person to lead this Indian side at the moment," he concluded.

Wade doubtful for Hyderabad Test
March 01, 2013 23:14 IST

Australian wicket-keeper Matthew Wade suffered a minor cheekbone fracture while batting at the nets and his availability for the second Test will depend on his condition on Saturday.

Wade was hit on his cheek while facing throwdowns during Australia's [ Images ] final training session.

The pint-sized gloveman went on to bat through the session after the freak training incident but precautionary scans later confirmed a facial fracture.

Cricket Australia said in a statement that Wade is likely to take his place in the line-up for the second Test, but still left open the possibility that he could be ruled out if he was to wake up with swelling or bruising on Saturday morning.

Wade is the only gloveman on the tour and if he was left out of the XI, Phillip Hughes may keep wicket, given that he has occasionally stood in at state and international level in the past.

If the selectors were to require a second wicketkeeper to fly to India [ Images ], Brad Haddin [ Images ] would get the job, but the team medical staff was confident Wade would be fit.

"Matthew Wade copped a knock to the cheek while facing throw downs in the nets this afternoon but batted on during training," team doctor Peter Brukner said in a statement.

"We sent him off for a precautionary scan after the session and he has a minor fracture, but has subsequently been cleared to play provided there is no excessive bruising and swelling overnight."

New Zealand add Wagner to squad for first England Test
March 02, 2013 08:29 IST

Left-arm paceman Neil Wagner has been rewarded with a place in New Zealand's [ Images ] squad for the first Test against England [ Images ] after taking six wickets in the ongoing tour match in Queenstown.

The South Africa-born 26-year-old joins a squad of 13 for the March 6 Test in Dunedin, New Zealand Cricket said in a statement on Saturday, and could earn his fourth Test cap if the hosts elect to field an all-pace attack.

The four-day tour match between a New Zealand XI and England XI finishes later on Saturday.
