AR Rahman on Thursday was named as Goodwill Ambassador of Indian Contingent for Rio Olympics 2016. The musician after Bollywood actor Salman Khan, Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra and former cricketer Sachin Tendulkar becomes the fourth celebrity to join as Goodwill Ambassador.

Few days back the leading musician had denied that he was approached to be the Goodwill Ambassador. However, Indian Olympic Association received an official written confirmation from the maestro today.

After being named as the Goodwill Ambassador, Rahman termed it as an honour for him. According to NEWS 18, Secretary General of IOA Rajeev Mehta said, “I would like to welcome AR Rahman on board as a goodwill ambassador of Indian contingent for Rio Olympics. It’s our privilege to have the Oscar winning living legend-music composer on board to spread awareness and promote the Olympic movement.”

He was hopeful that Rahman along with Salman Khan, Abhinav Bindra and Sachin Tendulkar will inspire sportspersons.

Post Salman Khan’s appointment as Goodwill Ambassador, many including former Athletes were vocal that the actor had nothing to do with the Olympics and snowballed into a controversy.
