Apple iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will be available in India from October 16, which will be one of the fastest roll-outs from the company. The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus went on sale in US, and other countries on 25 September and the October 16 release date means that India is getting the new models in less than a month’s time, a records of sort.

Apple has already announced that it sold nearly 13 million of these smartphones in the opening weekend, a new record as well for the company.

While the early launch of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus is good news for India, in terms of pricing, the new devices will start at a much higher price that the previous two smartphones. According to PriceBaba.com, the iPhone 6s will start at Rs 62,000 for 16GB, Rs 72,000 for 64GB and Rs 82,000 for 128GB, while the iPhone 6s Plus will start at Rs 72,000 for 16GB, Rs 82,000 for 64GB and Rs 92,000 for 128GB.

Of course Apple has not confirmed the pricing, so these numbers need to be taken with a pinch of salt. Interestingly in US, the unlocked version of the iPhone 6s starts at $649 which is around Rs 42,000 when converted, although taxes would mean a much higher price. If it is indeed Rs 62,000, then iPhone 6s in India, is priced considerably higher.

The iPhone 6s Plus costs $749 in the US for an unlocked version of the 16GB phone, which is around Rs 50,000 and goes up to $949 for $128GB which is Rs 62,000.

The new iPhones bring 3D Touch which allow for new gestures like Peek and Pop. The new iPhone also come with 2GB RAM. Apple also updated the camera of iPhone 6s and 6s Plus to 12-megapixel iSight camera which is now capable of shooting 4K videos. The front FaceTime camera is now 5-megapixels and Apple is using the display to light up at night time to click better selfies.

We’ll have to wait and see what the prices of the new iPhones in India are and whether Apple will give a good or a bad surprise to Indian fans.

Can’t wait 3 weeks for iPhone 6S? Pay Rs 1 lakh

It seems even a three-week wait for the Indian launch of the iPhone 6S and 6s Plus is too long for Delhiites, who are willing to pay big bucks to get their hands on the new Apple smartphones right now.

Since the international launch on September 25, customs officials at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport have seized 180 of the phones — all to be sold in the city’s grey market for over `1 lakh each, sources said.

“The seizures were made from different passengers and most of them were coming from Singapore or Hong Kong. One flyer was caught with 10 new iPhone 6S,” said a customs official at IGIA.

Smuggled handsets are already on sale at Gaffar Market in Karol Bagh, the largest grey market for phones in all of north India.

“Smugglers are expected to earn `30,000-50,000 per phone as there is a huge demand in India, especially Delhi. People want to own it as soon as possible,” said the customs official.

If brought through the proper channels, one has to pay 36% of the value of the device as customs duty. “To avoid this duty, passengers are smuggling the iPhones. If they want the seized phone back, they have to pay the duty as well as a penalty,” the official said.

The sources said most of the seized handsets were locked but these can be easily unlocked for R1,000.
