Last month, Apple acknowledged the iPhone 6s battery issue where some units were plagued with unexpected shutdowns. Apple announced a repair program saying that “very small number” of iPhone 6s manufactured between September and October 2015 have been affected by the issue. Under the repair program, Apple will replace the iPhone 6s battery for free of cost. If you have been experiencing a similar problem with your iPhone 6s, here’s how you can find out if your phone is eligible for battery replacement.

Apple has setup a support page for the iPhone 6s program for unexpected shutdown issue. On your iPhone 6s, tap on Settings > General > About, and note down the ‘serial number’. Next, head over to this page , choose your country below the iPhone 6s icon, enter the ‘serial number’ in the text box besides it and click on submit. If your iPhone 6s is entitled for a battery replacement, the same will be displayed on the page.

You can then visit any Apple authorized seller or service provider with your problematic iPhone 6s. They will cross check the serial number and offer free battery replacement. But do note, Apple will only replace your iPhone 6s battery if it is in working order. Also, devices with cracked screen won’t be fixed under this program.

Before you take your iPhone 6s to an Apple authorized service provider for battery replacement, take a complete backup of your data using iTunes, turn off the Find my iPhone security feature and perform a factory reset. To erase your data, tap on Settings > General > Reset > and tap on Erase all Content and Settings. Apple has also mentioned that the program covers iPhone 6s batteries for three years from the first retail sale. Also, the current battery replacement program will not extend the standard warranty of your iPhone.

Last month, Apple also launched a repair program for iPhone 6 Plus , where some units were affected with ‘Touch Disease.’ The issue involves flickering grey bar on the top of the display that causes iPhone’s touch input to deteriorate over time. However, Apple is charging users for repairs. Display replacement will set you back by discounted rate of Rs 9,999, which otherwise costs between Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000. However, the move may not go well with some users.
