ith the launch of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in 2011, Google added native support for capturing screenshots. While the feature has stayed almost similar through all these years, it may soon get some improvements. A recent YouTube video by user Maxr1998 shows that Android 7.0 Nougat comes with the ability to click partial or selective screenshots. Essentially, instead of snapping the entire screen and then cropping the screenshot, the feature allows users to manually select the area on their screen that they want to snap.
This feature is quite similar to that in Apple’s Macbooks where pressing Command + Shift + 4, lets you customize the screenshots manually. Spotted by Android Headlines on Reddit, some users were able to find an interesting code in the Android Nougat 7.1 Android Open Source Project, which indicates the existence of a feature called “partial screenshot.”
Other than the partial screenshot feature, the Android 7.0 Nougat brings in improvements to the user experience with new multitasking features, more efficient notification controls and improved data saver and battery features. Some of the most prominent upgrades are the on-the-go Doze mode, split screen, quick app switch and direct reply feature, among others.
The update will come with productivity features like Quick switch, which will make multitasking much easier. Users will be able to switch between apps by just double tapping the overview or the recent apps button. It also comes with a multi-window feature that will allow users to run two apps side by side on their screen. Additionally, the update supports a work mode toggle, which will let users to conveniently turn on and off their device’s work apps and related notifications. For performance, the update brings in features like Data saver, which as the name suggest, helps reduce cellular data usage. When a user’s Data saver is on, apps running in the background won’t be able to access cellular data. Under the feature, users can choose which apps have unrestricted cellular data access. To turn Data saver on, open Settings from the app tray and go to Data usage, then tap on Data saver. To adjust data access for individual apps, go to Unrestricted data access option.
Further, the update also comes with an interesting Doze on the Go feature, which lets the device go into lower power usage when it is not being used and or when the screen is off. Android Nougat also has a new JIT compiler, which improves the runtime device performance, helps reduce the amount of storage space required for apps, and helps make app and system updates much faster. Along with that, it has many stability improvements, which Includes changes that address bugs and help improve the stability of a user’s smartphone.
Quite similar to iOS, the Android Nougat update comes with a direct reply feature, which allows users to quickly reply to messages right from the notifications. When a user receives a message, they just have to swipe the status bar down and tap on ‘Reply’ on the message notification. They can type and send their response, without opening the app. Again, this feature works only on compatible applications.
Android Nougat also has bundled notifications, which has multiple notifications from the same app bundled into a single group. Drag the status bar down and tap the group to expand it and see or take action on individual notifications. This makes the notification panel clutter free and more organized. Additionally, the update gives more notification controls to users by allowing them to press and hold on a notification to toggle the settings directly. A user can silence or block future alerts from an app in the notification itself.
As for availability of the Android 7.0 Nougat, Google recently released Android 7.0 Nougat update for its Nexus-line, the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X. And currently, the Google Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones are the only ones running on the Android 7.1 Nougat OS. Android 7.1 Nougat Developer Preview has also been made available for some Nexus smartphones. Other manufacturers such as Samsung, LG, HTC, Moto and Xiaomi among others are expected to release the update for their smartphones soon. As of now, LG G5, HTC 10, One M9, One A9, Samsung Galaxy S7-family, Moto G4, Moto G4 Plus, Moto Z and Moto Z Force have been announced to get the update in the coming months. The list of smartphones may eventually increase as manufacturers start evaluating their smartphones
