Android 7.1.2 Announced, Public Beta Rolling Out Today!

Ready for the next Android maintenance release? I know, you just got Android 7.1.1, officially, but we are now ready to start preparing for Android 7.1.2! Google just announced that the first public beta is rolling out as early as today to supported devices.

At this time, we don’t know much about Android 7.1.2, only that it’s an “incremental maintenance release focused on refinements, so it includes a number of bugfixes and optimizations, along with a small number of enhancements for carriers and users.” Yep, that’s all we know until that beta shows up.

Devices supported out of the gate for the Beta include the Pixel and Pixel XL, Nexus 5X, Nexus Player, and Pixel C. The Nexus 6P will join the party “soon.” The final release won’t be here for a “couple of months.”

How to get Android 7.1.2 Nougat Beta on your Google Pixel, Pixel XL and Nexus devices

Google has released public beta builds of the Android 7.1.2 Nougat update to compatible devices. The update is an incremental maintenance release that brings system optimizations, and a number of bug fixes in tow. It is being rolled out over-the-air (OTA) to compatible Pixel and Nexus devices. These include the Google Pixel , Pixel XL , Pixel C, Nexus 5X and Nexus Player.

While the Huawei-made Nexus 6P is missing from the list, Google has promised that it is working on the update, and will be rolled out ‘soon.” However, the Motorola-made Nexus 6 smartphone and Samsung-made Nexus 9 tablet are missing from the list. Google has officially confirmed that these devices have reached end-of-life status and won’t receive any major updates, ARSTechnica reports. However, the devices will continue to receive security patches to keep them away from vulnerabilities.

Now, Google did not post any changelog of new features that Android 7.1.2 brings, but it has mentioned about the known issues that the update fixes. These include — occasional UI hangs, stability issues on Wi-Fi, Pixel launcher crashes when searching apps using a connected physical keyboard. Also, on some Pixel C devices, ‘quick settings’ may not be visible at times.

Other issues may be observed in the setup wizard – black screen during transition from boot animation to setup wizard, problems restoring messages device-to-device transfer, and after initial setup is completed, Wi-Fi is turned off on its own.

How to get Android 7.1.2 Nougat on your compatible Pixel or Nexus device

There are two ways to get the update. If you have already registered for Android Beta program, the update should be available via OTA. You can head over to Settings > About > System Updates. If the update is available, hit download and install it. Do note, as it is a phased rollout, it may take a few days till the update hits your region.

For those who haven’t enrolled for Android Beta program can head over to android.com/beta and sign-in with your Google account that you used to sign-in on your Android smartphone. Android 7.1.2 Nougat Will Let You Decide Where to Set a Live Wallpaper

Android 7.1.2, Google's latest maintenance release for Android Nougat, was released to compatible devices merely few days back and new features from the new build are slowly being reported. The latest in the series is a feature that many Android users have been waiting for years to arrive. With Android 7.1.2, Android users will be able to opt where they want to put the live wallpaper, as in, on the home screen or on both the home screen and lock screen. Unfortunately, earlier Android versions by default applied live wallpapers to both home screen and lock screen. The new feature was first reported by Droid-Life.

A recent report said that Android 7.1.2 also introduced the fingerprint 'swipe for notifications' gesture to Nexus 5X and
Nexus 6P smartphones. The feature was first available only on Pixel devices. The new feature for the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P can be found in the Settings menu under Moves and can be enabled. The swipe for notifications gesture lets you open the notification panel just by swiping down on the fingerprint sensor at the back.

The final release of the Android 7.1.2 Nougat is expected to be made available in a couple of months. Same as the beta update, the final release will be available to Pixel, Pixel XL, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus Player, and Pixel C devices.
