Alastair Cook stepped down as England's test captain.

Cook considered his position over Christmas following the 4-0 defeat to India which ended a year in which England lost eight Tests.

Cook led England 59 times with the high points winning two Ashes series on home soil in 2013 and 2015 and victory away in India in 2012 and South Africa last year. His lows included the 5-0 Ashes whitewash which precipitated a crisis in the Test team and the recent defeats on the sub-continent by India and Bangladesh.

The team drifted in 2016 and the emergence of Root and Ben Stokes, almost certain to be vice-captain, has shown the future direction England need to take.

Cook will now concentrate on opening the batting and leading with the bat and attempt to overhaul Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most Test runs.
