Samsung Electronics Aims to Change 5G Modem Chip Market with Exynos 5G

Samsung Electronics will take the wrap off a 5G telecommunication modem chip prototype for smartphones within this year. A change is expected in the modem chip market led by Qualcomm.

The Samsung Exynos 5G modem chip satisfies Release 15, an early 5G standard set by the 3GPP, a global mobile telecommunication standardization cooperation organization. The standard of 3GPP 5G Release 15 will be completed in coming June.

The Exynos 5G modem chip supports both frequency bands below 6GHz and high- frequency bands called millimeter waves (mmWAVEs) such as 28GHz and 39GHz. The chip also works with back telecommunication technologies such as 2G, 3G, and 4G LTE. The Exynos 5G can use up to 800 MHz by bundling eight 100-MHz bands into a carrier aggregation (CA) technology in high-frequency bands over 28 GHz. Theoretically, the Exynos 5G can realize a download speed of up to 5Gbps. This speed is 10 times faster than that of the current LTE service (a download speed of 500Mbps). The Exynos 5G can download up to 5 times faster than the current best-of-breed LTE modem chip (1 to 1.2Gbps download speed).

Airtel to unleash Mimo punch to beat rivals

In order to combat huge competition from Reliance Jio and Vodafone-Idea combine, Bharti Airtel is mulling over rolling out a globally tested Mimo technology in select cities throughout the country in a phased manner which will help the beleaguered mobile service provider offer a superior high-speed data and VoLTE voice experience to its existing customers.

Mimo (multiple-input, multiple-output), which is being coined as a pre-5G technology, has been ‘successfully’ pilot-tested by Bharti Airtel in Mumbai and Kolkata so far. The cellular services major, which is about to lose its ‘numero uno’ tag in Indian market to the Voda-Idea combine, is embarking on its ‘Project Leap’ and spend Rs 24,000 crore this year for the Mimo deployment across tier-I cities and other network expansion initiatives. Besides, rate slash in broadband rates and upcoming rollout of ‘fibre to the home’ (FTTH), Mimo is touted to be the new USP for Bharti Airtel to gain subscribers.

In recent tests, Nokia and China MobileResearch Institute (CMRI) successfully trialed a VR gaming application based on an AI-powered cloud RAN edge computing platform in CMCC Shanghai JiaDing 5G trial networks.

The solution is also being presented at MWC19 based on an open RAN architecture, utilizing artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) to manage the extreme network demands of real-time VR gaming.
