indian-hockey-team.jpg

New Delhi, : India hockey captain Sardar Singh and chief coach Terry Walsh Thursday expressed the hope that the team would end its 16-year-long wait for the Asian Games gold at the South Korean city of Incheon next month.

The India team has been clubbed in Pool B with Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Oman and China for the 17th Asian Games India’s gold medals at the Asian Games came in 1966 and 1998 and their last best finish recently was a silver medal in 2002 Busan edition. We are placed with Pakistan and China in our pool and we are looking forward to our clash against Pakistan. While the team is excited, we are not leaving anything to chance and we will take each match on the go.

“We are aiming to win the Gold and it all depends on how well we will start the tournament. The boys are working on the penalty corners, defence and attack and in the process aim to further strengthen our coordination on the field,” said Sardar after the practise session here Thursday at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium. Walsh also echoed the sentiments of his captain and said the team was aiming for only the gold.“We are focusing on creating opportunities for corners and converting them. We are even working on our ability to move the game from midfield to forward which will help on putting pressure on the defence of opponents hence creating chances for us,” he said.

On the two-minutes break in each quarter, Walsh said: “The break in each quarter will allow players to refresh and the team is working on this new format and making strategy accordingly.”

Koreas to resume talks on Pyongyang's joining of Incheon Asian Games

SEOUL, Aug. 22 (Yonhap) -- The two Koreas have agreed to resume their talks on issues about North Korea's participation in the Asian Games to be held in the South Korean city of Incheon next month, the unification ministry said Friday.

Inter-Korean dialogue on the sports event has been stalled since their last working-level talks on July 17 in the truce village of Panmunjom. The talks fell apart after the North Korean delegation walked out of the negotiations on how Seoul would assist North Korea's participation in the regional event. "The North Korean side has proposed (the two Koreas) discuss the practical issues through an exchange of letters," Unification Ministry spokesman Kim Eyi-do said in a briefing. "Our (South) side plans to accept the proposal and take necessary steps."

Kim said the North has also expressed its plan to send a 273-member delegation to the Asian Games to be held from Sept. 19 to Oct. 4, including 150 athletes.

Rohan Bopanna may also pull out of Asian Games

NEW DELHI: India's tennis campaign at the Asian Games appears to be falling apart even before the start as a cloud of doubt is now hanging over Rohan Bopanna's participation since the top doubles player is keen to salvage his 2014 pro season by playing on the ATP Tour instead of competing in Incheon.

It has been learnt that Bopanna, who last year became world number three in the ATP doubles rankings, is not happy with his 2014 run and wants to make amends by winning matches on the demanding Tour in the remainder of the season.

If Bopanna decides to opt out of the Indian squad, it will be the country's second big loss as top singles player Somdev Devvarman has already pulled out of the event due to same reason.

"Rohan is in the same boat as Somdev, only in doubles. I am not sure yet if he will be with us at the Asian Games," Anand Amritraj, captain of India's Asian Games and Davis Cup squads, said. It has been learnt that Bopanna, who has played a pivotal role along with Somdev in India's good show in the Davis Cup in the last few years, had a chat with Amritraj on Wednesday about his participation and is still undecided.
