Jio Fiber My 6-Year Experience, Issues, and Solutions

I have been using Jio Fiber since 2019, so it’s been around 6 years. Today, I’m going to share my experience with it. This might be a bit long, so please be patient and take the time to read it. Thank you.

In 2024, I discovered these forums, which have really helped me address my issues, find proper solutions, and assist others.

Before Jio, I was using my local cable internet (ORTEL Broadband), which provided 10 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload for around 480 rupees. In my area, there were no other internet providers available, so I went with ORTEL. The funny part was that my local provider only had one plan. The service was a 3 out of 10—you probably already know how they treat customers; they don’t care if the service gets disconnected. Even though they provided internet through cable (copper coaxial cable), I got around 14 ms ping, 50 ms download latency, and 30 ms upload latency. I still don’t know how they managed that much optimization, even with cable internet.

I remember back in 2018, my local cable internet had a weird issue where, after 6 PM, i couldn’t access the internet. Despite making over 50 complaints, they didn’t listen. After all those back-and-forth conversations, in 2019, I decided to switch to Jio Fiber.

On September 5, 2019(source internet) , Jio launched their fiber internet publicly with pricing, but before that, they were in beta testing, and those who got the connection didn’t need to pay anything until the prices were announced. I think at that time, 100 GB was free, and if you needed more data, they provided a 50 GB data booster for free.

Installation: I opted for Jio Fiber at 1500 rupees, which included 1 month of free with 100 Mbps. After the first month, I recharged my plan with 399 rupees, which was more than enough for me.

Service
In those 6 years, I think I faced complete disconnection issues around 30 times. For uptime, Jio is the best, but if your internet gets disconnected, you won't get service on the same day. You need to wait at least until the next day because, whenever I raise a service request, the slot is unavailable on the same day. If you're lucky, the service person might get the job done on the same day.

Problem with Jio Fiber -
  • Ping, Latency, and Jitter: Jio Fiber's ping, latency, and jitter are good for normal use, but if you are a gamer, online educator, or remote worker, it might cause problems. In India, Jio's user base is so large that their servers can't handle all those connections at low latency. They keep it at a certain limit, so you can't get less than that.
  • ONT Restrictions: Jio Fiber ONTs are heavily locked and controlled by default policies. If you change something in it, after some time, it will revert to the original settings.
  • ONT Credentials: If you ask for the username and password of the ONT, they straightforwardly say they can't provide it. Why? If I want to do some basic configurations, then why they not gave me. Luckily, the username and password are available on the internet.
  • IPv6 vs. IPv4: Jio Fiber gives you both IPv6 and IPv4, which is great, but IPv6 is less optimized compared to IPv4, resulting in higher latency, ping, and jitter. If you decide to disconnect IPv6, then none of the Jio services will work, especially Jio calling services. Below, I tested the speeds I get with IPv4 alone and with both IPv4 and IPv6.
  • Custom DNS Issues: Custom DNS does not work well. When I use a custom DNS, for the first 10 minutes, I get low latency, fast browsing, and everything is smoother, but after 10 minutes, everything goes back to normal. This might be due to ISP DNS override.
  • Service Engineers: Service engineers have limited knowledge about core technical issues, which causes more headaches. You have to explain what’s really happening, and then they say, "Okay, let me reset the router, and your problem will be solved." Really? If resetting the router was the solution, I could have done it myself. So why even bother asking in the first place?
  • QoS Issues: I'm using the JCOW414 router, and its QoS is not well-optimized. The primary priority for QoS is on video watching and voice calls.
  • Wi-Fi Signal Issues: A few years ago, my 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi signal strength started getting low, even when I stood in front of the router. My phone wasn't getting a single Wi-Fi signal. To solve this issue, it took them 3 days to complete the service, and in the end, they had to change the router.
  • Wi-Fi Signal Strength: By default, the 2.4GHz Wi-Fi signal strength is set to 75%. If you want more range, set it to 100%.
  • ONT Router Performance: The Jio ONT router is totally trash. I’m using my old TP-Link router, which is 7 years old and only supports 2.4GHz. However, if I compare it to the Jio Fiber 2.4GHz, my TP-Link router gives me better speed, better range, and even better latency.
  • IPv6 on TP-Link Router: IPv6 is not working on my TP-Link router. I don't know whether it's an issue with my TP-Link router or because the Jio ONT is heavily locked. When I use access mode on the TP-Link, then I get IPv6. I'm not exactly sure what the problem is.

I think I have covered all the important points that will help you. If I missed anything, I will edit this post and add more points later

Seeking Help Suggest a smartphone under 20000

Hello all. I am planning to buy a smartphone under 20000 for general daily use with zero gaming and minimal camera use. My spec preferences:

- Snapdragon processor preferable
- Long battery life
- Close to stock Android experience
- 5G VoNR (Vo5G) support
- 4K video support
- Android 14
- 6 GB RAM (8 GB will be asking for too much in this price range)
- Camera can be of any quality
- Will not be playing any games

All suggestions are welcome. Sorry if I'm asking for too much under 20000 😆 😂

JioFiber Review: 1+ Year Experience

Hello there! :welcome:

I have been using JioFiber since more than a year now, so thought about writing a review here. I'll be covering multiple sections, so just scroll to the section you are interested in, if you don't want to read everything. Apart from that, please remember that the experience will vary from place to place, city to city and even state to state. And I don't want to reveal my city because I am from a fairly small city, so I don't like to mention the name for privacy reasons.

RailWire sh#t Talk (required):

I was waiting for JioFiber for a long time because my previous ISP, RailWire, was a piece of ****. That used to remain disconnected for hours, sometimes even days and their reactions used to be: "Aap bas 1200rs. deke itna demand kar rahe hain, 50000-70000 rupay dijiye per month, fir deta achchha service" (You're just paying Rs. 1200 and demanding so much. Give me Rs. 50k-70k per month then I'll give good service). Words from their Odisha MSP (I am from Chhattisgarh). Their LCO was good though.

So, getting JioFiber was great for me.

Installation:

It was done fairly quickly, they took a while to install and activate the OTT applications though. They did not believe I could do them. ._.

Internet connected but it was disconnecting randomly. I raised a complaint at around 8 PM. After that, I thought about replugging that green wire connected to the ONT. And guess what? They did not plugged that properly. Internet started working great after that.

They came in the morning. Took a photo that internet is working and left.

Speed:
Initially, I had capped speed. So, I was getting 144 Mbps in 150 Mbps plan. Soon, the cap was removed and started getting 154-157 Mbps in 150 Mbps plan. There were speed issues but I'll mention them somewhere below.

Here it is on 1Gbps plan:

IJGPpMM.png

Upload speed is mostly fast on speed test, but in reality, it is mostly 60-80 Mbps, except Google Drive where it sometimes go beyond 100 Mbps.

Uptime:

This was the main reason I hated my old ISP. Getting disconnected for hours every other day feels bad. JioFiber on the other hand is great. Till now, it has gone literally down only once when it was down in the whole nation. It does not feel bad when everybody else is also suffering, you know. So, I did not mind that.

Apart from that, there have just been slowness and ping issues, but internet was always connected.

Speed & Ping Issues:

With ping issues, I am not talking about routing, I'll mention that below. Now, there have been times when I faced speed and extremely high ping issues. Those were mostly fixed within an hour or so.

There was once speed and ping issue in my city for a few days but it was also happening at certain hours of the day. (To know more, check the review's Support experience)

Routing:

Now this is where JioFiber have been not-so-good. I cannot call it outright bad since it has decent enough ping for gaming, but it is not as good as it should be.

Ping varies a lot. If I connect to Valorant, I can have anywhere between 30-80ms ping, mostly 40ms though. If I reconnect the internet, the ping will change. So, basically, their routing changes all the time. Singapore server goes around 70ms to 110ms, mostly 90ms.

Local ISP here stays around 23ms for Mumbai. 60ms for Singapore. There is rarely any change here.

Browsing Experience:

It is fine, but at times some sites load slowly. Compared to local ISP, it feels slow though. Almost every website open quickly on my local ISP, meanwhile JioFiber randomly struggles on some sites.

Support:

They always come home whenever I raise any complaint. Often, quite fast. However, they are dumb about these things. Don't know what's what. Just know few things like how to do installation. How to change ONT and so on.

As I mentioned above, once there was too much issues in my city. I raised complaint about this and mentioned them a bunch of times on how everyone I know is facing the issues but they just said- no sir, we are not facing issues, we'll come and check once.

They came and I shown them the traceroute during the issues. I felt like I was showing some difficult Math equation to a nursery kid, considering his reaction. After agreeing to my words that the issue cannot be with the ONT, he said- "ONT change kardete hain thik hojayega" (We'll change the ONT and the issue will be fixed). I felt sad because all of my efforts went in vain.

At the end, they replaced my JCOW414 with JCOW404. It was bad router. Also, internet did not connected for 3-5 days (I forgot) and they came everyday, 3-4 times a day. Multiple calls.

At last, they decided to change ONT again. Again with JCOW404. Internet worked at last.

JCOW404 was so bad that I was forced to get my own ONT and use my router. Too much ping spikes and unstable ping even to the ONT. So, not a fan of their employees' knowledge.

At last:

There is no better option here, so I am fine with them. It just works and that's what matters a lot for many. Local ISPs have packet loss issues, so can't use them.

And I am currently facing some issues with the optical signal, so will update about it once I raise complaint and see what they do.

How do I get in touch?
If you're okay with the price and serious about buying email me at vishalrao at gmail to arrange a visit to check it out and pick it up.

PS:

You are, of course, welcome to visit my place and inspect the computer yourself (run CPU-z, HWINFO, benchmarks, your favourite apps etc) before buying. It runs Windows 11 and Linux just great.

You are, of course, welcome to purchase the whole unit and resell it for individual parts a.k.a. "flip it".

It's a great developer workstation for use as a local docker/kubernetes app cluster, distributed apps like Apache Spark, even AI and some casual gaming if you get a new GPU.

Friends, nowadays all the companies like Telecom, Entertainment are not displaying the
Plans/ packs with GST in their web page / App product/service.
Since for common people it's only the Final price or Max. Retail price only all are looking for . (I e) Inclusive of taxes. Like in FMCG products - Biscuits, Tea, coffee prices.

Created poll to your opinion. Yes/ No if your comments on that.
