Telecom service provider Bharti Airtel is extensively rolling out its 5G Plus services across India. Now, the company has streamlined the process of switching from a physical SIM to an eSIM for its customers. Airtel users can now upgrade to eSIM via the Airtel Thanks app. Airtel CEO Gopal Vittal has emailed its customers, informing them about the benefits of eSIM and how to upgrade to it.
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a small chip that is built into the device and can be activated remotely by the telecom provider. Unlike a physical SIM card, an eSIM does not need to be inserted or removed from the device. Many new smartphones and other devices are compatible with eSIM technology.
“In these times of digital-first lifestyles, where mobiles, tablets, and watches are all interconnected, the eSIM will provide seamless connectivity for you. For instance, you will be able to go for a morning jog and not carry your phone along since the eSIM will enable connectivity on your smartwatch while your phone sits by your bedside at home and you enjoy your run,” said Airtel CEO & MD Gopal Vittal in an emailed statement to its customers.
Airtel CEO also said that users will be able to use multiple mobile numbers on a single eSIM, and it is easier to change devices with an eSIM. He further emphasized the security advantages of eSIM, saying, “In instances of theft, if your device gets stolen, it will be that much harder for criminals to get rid of your eSIM, since they are unlike the traditional SIMs that could be physically removed from phones. This will also make a lost smartphone easier to track.”
According to Gopal Vittal, all devices that support eSIM technology are compatible with the Airtel eSIM, and a physical SIM can be converted into an eSIM easily through the Airtel Thanks app. As soon as the eSIM profile is downloaded and enabled, it is activated.
“As I said, we at Airtel want to do everything we can to ensure that you have as convenient and efficient a connectivity experience as possible. And, as always, we would love to hear from you on any further suggestions you may have for us,” Vittal added. Users can also reply to that email to share their feedback.
