West Indies drop Samuels, include Dowrich for tri-series in Zimbabwe

Shane Dowrich, the West Indies wicketkeeper-batsman, received a maiden call-up to the One-Day International (ODI) team for the tri-series in Zimbabwe, also including Sri Lanka, later this month, after his heroics with the bat in the just-concluded third and final Test where he helped his team to a rare away win in Sharjah.

Fast bowler Miguel Cummins has also been drafted into the 15-member squad while the experienced batsman Marlon Samuels and teenage fast bowler Alzarri Joseph were left out. Samuels's luck ran out after a mediocre outing against Pakistan in the Tests. The experienced batsman scored just one half-century, in the first Test, but his second best score on tour was just 30.

Dowrich, who had played eight Tests, wasn't at his best behind the stumps but chipped in with knocks of 47 and unbeaten 60 in the two innings after a top-order collapse on both occasions as West Indies earned a five-wicket consolation win in their last game on the UAE tour.

Senior players Denesh Ramdin and Kieron Pollard too were overlooked for the tri-series which also features Sri Lanka and kicks off on November 14 in Harare.

West Indies squad: Jason Holder (Captain), Carlos Brathwaite, Kraigg Brathwaite, Shane Dowrich, Darren Bravo, Jonathan Carter, Johsnon Charles, Shanon Gabriel, Evin Lewis, Sunil Narine, Ashley Nurse, Sulieman Benn, Miguel Cummins, Shai Hope, Rovman Powell.

Upul Tharanga to captain Sri Lanka in Zimbabwe tri-series

Upul Tharanga has been named stand-in skipper for the upcoming One-Day International (ODI) tri-series, featuring Zimbabwe and West Indies, the national selectors announced on Saturday (November 5). The seven-match tournament is scheduled to begin on November 14.

The decision was taken due to the absence of regular captain Angelo Mathews and vice-captain Dinesh Chandimal. Kusal Janith Perera has now been appointed Tharanga's deputy in the 15-man squad.

While Mathews pulled out of the tour after MRI scans revealed multiple leg injuries, Chandimal was hopeful of playing the ODI-leg of the Zimbabwe tour after undergoing a surgery for a thumb injury. There were reports of him regaining full fitness but it has now been confirmed that he will not be part of the limited-overs team.

Asela Gunaratne and Lahiru Kumara - who made their debut in the first Test - have earned a maiden call-up for the ODI squad, while Shehan Jayasuriya, Nuwan Kulasekara and Jeffrey Vandersay have been recalled.

Sri Lanka squad: Dhananjaya De Silva, Kusal Janith Perera (w & v/c), Niroshan d*ckwella, Upul Tharanga (c), Kusal Mendis, Shehan Jayasuriya, Asela Gunaratne, Sachith Pathirana, Nuwan Kulasekara, Dasun Shanaka, Nuwan Pradeep, Lahiru Kumara, Suranga Lakmal, Lakshan Sandakan, Jeffrey Vandersay
