YouTube is launching short video format ' Shorts ' starting in India with an early beta version in the next few days. YouTube said Shorts is a new short-form video experience right on YouTube for creators and artists who want to shoot short, catchy videos using their mobile phones.

"Over the next few days in India, we’re launching an early beta of Shorts with a handful of new creation tools to test this out. This is an early version of the product, but we're releasing it now to bring you — our global community of users, creators and artists — on our journey with us as we build and improve Shorts," YouTube said in a blogpost on Monday.

Building YouTube Shorts, a new way to watch & create on YouTube

In its latest attempt to make it easier to produce short videos, the video platform is experimenting with a prominent Create button.

The button appears under select music videos and lets users create 15-second Shorts without leaving the current screen. Upon tapping the button, the app will open the camera to let users shoot a video with the currently playing music. Alternatively, they can also import videos from the gallery.

Story time: YouTube is adding a button to quickly make TikTok-style videos

YouTube is bringing the beta version of a short-form video service to the U.S. in March.

That news and other tidbits came in a blog post by chief product officer Neal Mohan, in the first installment of a new, behind-the-scenes series about technology and product development at the video operation.

Shorts, which is now in beta in India, has seen the number of Indian channels using its creation tools triple since December, the company said. The YouTube Shorts player now gets more than 3.5 billion daily views globally.

YouTube Shorts, A Response To TikTok, Sets U.S. Beta Launch In March

YouTube Shorts, the company’s short-form answer to TikTok, is launching in beta in the United States starting today. The short video format has already been available for several months in India, but today marks its debut stateside (along with the addition of several new features).

For the beta launch, YouTube Shorts will feature all the basics of any TikTok clone: a multi-segment camera that makes it easy for creators to quickly string together clips, a wide selection of music tracks (with catalogs from “over 250 labels and publishers”), and a robust-looking captioning tool, the last of which is debuting alongside the US launch. “We really want to create a playground of creativity here where we give creators the raw materials to produce great videos,” says Todd Sherman, YouTube’s product lead for Shorts.

YouTube Shorts arrives in the US to take on TikTok, but the beta is still half-baked

In YouTube Shorts creators were previously only able to splice short audio clips from other videos on the platform. This most recent update will allow users to clip 1- to 5-second segments from eligible long-form videos and Shorts to use in new short-form content.

YouTube also announced today that Shorts are now accessible via web and tablets, with a new Shorts tab appearing across devices over the next few weeks.
