The first iPad shipped in 2010, and many of you who own one may have noticed that it doesn’t come with a pre-installed calculator app. While there are many apps you can download off the App Store, an app like a calculator is often expected to be there when you buy a new mobile device, especially considering all other iOS devices have one made by Apple . Turns out there is a ‘funny story’ behind why the Apple iPad doesn’t come with a built-in calculator app, and yes it involves Steve Jobs.

Answering a question on why there is no default calculator app on iPads, Reddit user
tangoshukudai had an interesting story involving Steve Jobs and Scott Forstall.

Tangoshukudai says that when prototyping iPads, the developers ported the iOS calc app, but as you would expect it was not optimized for the bigger screen.

But Jobs would have none of it, and called Forstall to his office and simply asked, “Where is the new design for the calculator? This looks awful.” Despite protests, Jobs wouldn’t allow Forstall to go with the design, and ultimately the app was pulled from the iPad.

It again highlights Jobs’ attention to the minutest of details, but what it also proves is just how low on priority the app is for Apple. It’s been six years since the launch of the first iPad, and still there is no built-in calculator app. In fact, Tangoshukudai writes, “It has been such low priority since then that no one cares to work on it since there is more important things to work on.”

We can’t comment on the authenticity of the story, but it does sound like something usually happened in Apple during Job’s regime. The user also claims that he has worked for Apple before.

In case you are wondering, there are quite a few good calculator apps for the iPad available on the App Store. You can try out apps like PCalc Lite, The Calculator Free, MyScript Calculator, and Digits, the calculator for humans among others.
