Soon, those buying new mobile SIM cards may be asked to provide their fingerprints or any other biometric detail, said a newspaper report on Wednesday.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has asked the Department of Telecommunication (DoT) to maintain a centralised database which may be linked to the National Intelligence Grid.
The DoT had last year made it mandatory for mobile service providers to verify an applicant before issuing a SIM card. But despite repeated warnings, the service providers were found flouting rules.
Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar had also pitched for an effective filtering mechanism before issuing new SIM cards.
