Yahoo, one of the biggest email providers in the world, has been sued for intercepting users' emails. The lawsuit has been filed by Brian Pincus, a lawyer who seeks to represent non-Yahoo email users whose emails have been read by the internet company.

According to a Bloomberg report, "The plaintiff seeks damages of $5,000 for each person whose privacy was allegedly invaded, according to a complaint filed November 15 in federal court in San Jose, California."

The lawsuit claims that Yahoo reads users' emails to "match and serve targeted advertising and for spam and malware detection."

Yahoo recently updated its policy for email users. As per the new policy, "Yahoo's automated systems scan and analyze all incoming and outgoing communications content sent and received from your account."

With over 250 million users, Yahoo is one of the biggest email service providers in the world. Emails are scanned not only to serve ads, but also to detect spam and malware.

Search giant Google too has faced accusations of intercepting its users' emails.
