Yahoo uses Facebook to test six degrees of separation theory

How many people separate you from, well, me for example? Yahoo Research is testing whether the theory about six degrees of separation—that any two people can be shown to be connected through friends in six links or fewer—is true. And if you have a Facebook account, you can participate in the project, called the Small World Experiment.
The Small World Experiment is designed to test whether anyone in the world can get a message to anyone else, randomly selected from a pool of Facebook users who agree to make themselves a "target," in six steps by passing it from friend to friend. Sociologists have long pondered whether the theory has any teeth, but there's never been any solid evidence to support or disprove the idea.

he experiment, which is open to anyone with a Facebook account (pending your agreement that Yahoo's app can access certain information about you), starts with becoming a "sender," or person at one end of the chain. You're then given a "target" or person you must try to reach in six steps or less. The volunteer target also provides some personal information, such as work history, schools attended, age, current city of residence, and spouse's name.
After perusing the fact sheet, senders must choose only one of their Facebook friends to start the chain. An email is sent to the person in question, and if they choose to participate, they'll follow the same procedure.
Through questionnaires, the researchers at Yahoo are collecting information about who participates in the chain. Additionally, if you opt to become a target (which anyone can do completing one sender transaction), you're asked to fill out an additional questionnaire, which will become your profile sheet for the sender who receives you as a target. (One note: I had better luck signing up and participating in Firefox than Chrome.)
The study is led by principal research scientist at Yahoo Research, Duncan Watts, who was inspired by a 1967 experiment by Stanley Milgram at Harvard.

Yahoo Japan coming up with Android-based Yahoo Phone

Yahoo is set to launch an Android-based smartphone called “Yahoo Phone” in Japan, in collaboration with the country's third largest mobile operator Softbank. The move has come as a surprise for many as Yahoo is considered to be close to the Microsoft, the search and productivity rival of Google, with Yahoo going so far as to power its search by Microsoft's Bing. However, it's notable that Yahoo owns each of its international sites with the exception of Yahoo Japan in which it has only 34.79 percent minority stake.
According to TechCrunch, the phone will be manufactured by Sharp and is a remodelled version of the “AQUOS PHONE THE PREMIUM SoftBank 009SH”. The Yahoo Phone features Android 2.3 Gingerbread as its operating system, and comes with a 4-inch LCD with QHD resolution, an 8MP camera, Bluetooth 3.0, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, a microSDHC slot, a digital TV tuner, an e-wallet function, infrared communication, and plenty of other geeky Japanese features.
The Yahoo Phone has pre-installed Yahoo apps such as Yahoo Japan Home, Yahoo Japan Auctions, and Yahoo Luco, etc. According to reports, the phone will hit retail shelves later next month in Japan.

4 Security Tips Spurred by Recent Phishing Attacks on Gmail, Hotmail, and Yahoo

When you hear about a phishing attack on e-mail accounts, it's easy to assume that the victim was just too gullible. But as recent attacks on Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo Mail have demonstrated, the old rule of "don't open attachments or click links from untrusted sources" isn't always enough to fend off a targeted phishing attempt.

Security firm Trend Micro has dissected the attacks to figure out how they worked. Here are a few key takeaways:

Friends Can't Always Be Trusted

Everyone knows to treat certain kinds of e-mails with suspicion, the like the one from your bank claiming that it needs to verify your user name and password. But the recent spearphishing attacks on Gmail users were made to look like they came from friends, family, or colleagues. This trick made victims more likely to open attachments and click on links to fake log-in pages.

Sometimes, You're Powerless

In late May, Trend Micro discovered a vulnerability in Hotmail that could compromise a user's account just by previewing an e-mail. The malicious messages, specially crafted for individual targets, triggered a script that could steal e-mail messages and contact information and forward new messages to another account. Microsoft has already patched this vulnerability, but only after real-world attacks were discovered.

In the Gmail attacks, phishers used a vulnerability in a Microsoft protocol to analyze the user's antivirus software. That way, the attackers could tailor their code to avoid detection and take over the victim's computer.

One Phishing Attempt Begets Another

Security researchers suspect that successful targeted phishing attempts can lead to follow-up attacks on the same user, and they'll be more dangerous because the attacker can draw on personal information to sound more convincing.

You're Probably Safe

The recent phishing attacks on Gmail, Hotmail, and Yahoo users were aimed at specific people, including government officials, activists, journalists, and military personnel. Attackers used personal information and specialized code to target specific individuals. Most ordinary users, by comparison, are likely to see simpler phishing attempts on a wide net of targets, in hopes of snaring a few gullible users.

The Usual Tips Still Apply

Aside from using antivirus software to sniff out attacks, Trend Micro recommends looking for spelling or grammatical errors to determine the trustworthiness of an e-mail source. If you click on an external link, pay attention to the URL; the page may look like it belongs to Google, Yahoo, or Microsoft, but the Web address will tell the truth. If you suspect an attack, check your e-mail settings to see if messages are being forwarded to other addresses. And if you use Gmail, you can enable two-step verification for added security.

Fired Yahoo CEO backs down, resigns from board

Carol Bartz has resigned from the Yahoo board of directors that she blasted for firing her as the company's CEO last week.

The resignation reversed a defiant stance that Bartz took in a fiery interview published on Fortune magazine's website on Sept. 8. Bartz said, at the time, that she intended to retain her seat on Yahoo's board even though she considered her fellow directors to be "doofuses."

Bartz, who is 63, resigned from the board Sept. 9, according to an email from board spokesman Charles Sipkins. Yahoo Inc. had previously said that Bartz was obligated to resign after her ouster as CEO.

Yahoo, which is based in Sunnyvale, Calif., has nine members left on its board.

An investment hedge fund that owns a 5.2 percent stake in Yahoo is asking Chairman Roy Bostock and three other directors to resign too. The fund, called Third Point, contends the board needs to be held accountable for hiring Bartz in January 2009 and other decisions that have contributed to a steep drop in Yahoo's stock price in the last five years.

Bartz's resignation from the board could clear the way for her and the company to agree on the terms of her severance package. In a Securities and Exchange Commission filing last week, Yahoo acknowledged Bartz qualifies for severance without providing further details.

At the end of last year, Bartz was eligible for a severance package worth about $10.4 million in cash and stock incentives, according to calculations that Yahoo listed in a shareholder proxy statement issued in April. Stock awards that Bartz received this year could drive up the value of her severance package.
