Xiaomi, after creating a buzz on social platforms, has finally revealed its first smartphone for the Indian market, the Mi3. The smartphone is now listed on the company's site at Rs. 14,999, and will go on sale on July 15.
The Xiaomi Mi3 runs a highly tweaked version of the Android 4.3 dubbed MIUI version 5. It comes with a 5-inch full-HD LCD display (1080x1920 pixels) offering a pixel density of 441ppi.

With the announcement of Mi3, Xiaomi has become one of the first handset manufacturers to offer an Android smartphone with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset below the sub-Rs. 15,000 mark. It is powered by a 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 (8274AB) processor coupled with 2GB of RAM and Adreno 330 GPU. The Mi3 is listed with a 16GB inbuilt storage with no word on expandable storage support.

It sports a 13-megapixel rear camera featuring a f/2.2 aperture and dual-LED flash while the front houses a 2-megapixel camera. It is backed by a 3050mAh battery. The Mi3 measures 144x73.6x8.1mm and weighs 145 grams. It will be available in Metallic Grey colour.

The Chinese handset maker, often referred as the 'Apple of China', has not announced its plan for selling the Xiaomi Mi3 via any channel. Based on earlier reports, Xiaomi, following the footsteps of Motorola, is expected to team up with the e-commerce giant Flipkart to launch its handsets in the country.

Contradicting any plans of tie-up with Flipkart, Xiaomi's Global Vice President and former Google Vice President, Hugo Barra had hinted in March that the company plans to sell the smartphones at competitive prices via its own e-commerce site.

It is in competition with mid-segment devices such as Motorola's Moto G, Blackberry's Z3 and Samsung's mid-range of smartphones, among others.

NEW DELHI: Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi launched its first device in India - Mi3 - its flagship product which will be available for sale from July 15 onwards, as per the company's India website page.

The smartphone which runs on its own version of Android called MIUI has been priced at Rs 14,999, pitting it directly in competition with mid-segment devices such as Motorola's Moto G, Blackberry's latest Z3 and Samsung's mid-range of smartphones, among others. This is the price segment which draws the most interest among smartphone consumers, say analysts.

The Mi3 runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 2.3 Ghz processor, offers 2 GB RAM, has a 5-inch full high definition display and a 13 megapixel rear camera with dual LED flash, apart from a 2 megapixel front facing camera.

Powered by a battery backup of 3050 mAh, the makers claim the device can sustain 21 hours of 3G Internet usage, and 500 hours of standby time.

Xiaomi will be the second company after Motorola to adopt an online-only selling policy, which will make this space interesting to watch since India's third largest smartphone brand Karbonn has begun selling some devices exclusively online through Flipkart. Others like Alcatel Onetouch and Celkon are also adopting this route that makes free of distribution hassles.

Xiaomi is learnt to have tied up with Flipkart for sale of its devices. However, neither company has confirmed this.

Founded in 2010 by serial entrepreneur Lei Jun, Beijing-headquartered Xiaomi has become one of China's biggest electronics companies that designs, develops and sells smartphones, mobile apps and other such consumer items.

Popular as the 'Apple of China', Xiaomi launched its official website for India earlier this month, making it the sixth Chinese brand to enter the world's fastest growing smartphone market. It recently hired Jabong co-founder Manu Kumar Jain to head its operations in India and has begun hiring for national operations.

According to research firm IDC, smartphone shipments in India grew almost three-fold to over 44 million in 2013, and in the first quarter of 2014, 17.59 million smartphones were shipped into India compared with 6.14 million last year.

However, this market is also extremely competitive with Indian brands like Micromax, Karbonn and Lava cornering over 31% share while another 30% is held by numerous smaller local brands like Swipe, Celkon, Intex and international ones including Apple, Sony apart from competitors from China, such as Huawei, ZTE, Lenovo, Gionee and Oppo. Korean major Samsung is the market leader.

Xioami's market share in China has increased to 6% in the fourth quarter of 2013, within three years of beginning operations, trailing Apple as the fifth largest with Samsung in the lead.

The company said it will also sell power banks of 5200 mAh and 10400 mAh through its website but hasn't revealed their prices or when will they be available for purchase.
