Alongside the anticipated Mi Note 2, Xiaomi also introduced its a new VR headset, called the Mi VR. The virtual reality headset is an upgraded version of the first version of Xiaomi’s 3D Glasses that came with a zipper design. The upgraded version comes with a new design along with several new features and improvements. Priced at RMB 199 (approximately Rs 1,900), the latest Mi VR is compatible with the newest Mi Note 2, Mi 5s, Mi 5s Plus, and the Mi 5 smartphones. Right now, there’s no information about when the device will be launched outside China.

Design wise, the Mi VR looks very similar to the
Sony Playstation VR that comes with a headband-inspired design. The Mi VR headset comes with a hardware-level motion sensor along with a 9-axis inertial motion controller, something which the first VR device lacked. The new Mi VR differs from the original VR Play or VR 3D Glasses (as it was called in international markets) is the design language. The new VR headset is in plastic and features contemporary design, while the older device looked like the Google Cardboard VR headset and used materials like Spandex and Lycra.

One of the highlights of the VR 3D Glasses was the zipper design, which Xiaomi says lets one insert smartphones of difference sizes and form factors, is missing from the newer version that relies on the snap and lock feature. Xiaomi says that the new Mi VR comes with motion sensor that offers 16X higher sensitivity making the immersive experience lag-free. Currently, there are over 500 panoramic videos, 30 VR apps, and over 200 registered developers for the MIUI VR. The Mi VR comes with system level optimizations and when coupled with a high -performance smartphone, Xiaomi says it results in a 16ms ultra-low latency which essentially means less motion-sickness.

At the same event, Xiaomi also took the wraps off its anticipated Mi Note 2 smartphone. The flagship smartphone features two-sided dual curves designed in 7-series aluminium frame. The Mi Note 2 comes with a 5.7-inch OLED flexible display and offers 77.2 percent screen-to-body ratio. Under the hood is a Snapdragon 821 quad-core chipset clocked at 2.35GHz and is available in two variants of 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage, and 6GB of RAM with 128GB UFS 2.0 storage.

In terms of camera, the Mi Note 2 features a 22.56-megapixel high-resolution camera, with Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) and supports 4K video recording. Up front is an 8-megapixel camera with AutoFocus and Beautify 3.0 for selfies.

Keeping the Mi Note 2 ticking is 4,070mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0. Connectivity features include USB Type-C, dual-SIM card slots, 4G LTE with VoLTE support, Bluetooth, NFC, Wi-Fi 802.11ac and SAP GPS. In terms of 4G LTE band, the smartphone supports six types and 37 bands for global roaming. There is also support for 4G+ that can reach maximum speeds of 600Mbps. The Mi Note 2 is priced at RMB 2799 (roughly Rs 27,000) for a 4GB/64GB variant, RMB 3299 (roughly Rs 32,000) for the 6GB/128GB variant, and RMB 3499 (Rs 34,000) for the 6GB/128GB Global variant with support for 37LTE bands.
