With Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals suspended for two years, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is planning to float tender for adding two new teams to the Indian Premier League (IPL) in order to keep the eight-team format intact.

With CSK and RR expected to return to the IPL after serving their suspension, having two new teams is the best option available before the BCCI.

After the return of CSK and RR, the IPL would become a 10-team event, which is what the BCCI had originally envisaged.

A six-team format would financially hurt the revenues of all franchises as it would mean less number of matches.

But the BCCI is also aware of the other issues that will crop up.

Some franchise owners are of the opinion that floating tenders for new teams at this stage when the IPL brand has taken a hit would not be a right step as it would not capture the right value of the property.

The BCCI could also think of adopting two teams.

According to a recent report in Mumbai Mirror, the BCCI was also toying with the idea of having two foreign teams to replace CSK and RR until they complete their suspension.

This, the report said, would maintain the equilibrium when the two teams return.

The foreign teams will be more than willing to ply their trade even in return for participation fee, which will be much less than what the two suspended teams would have got from central pool as their share or revenue.
