Belagavi railway station has become the first under Hubballi division of the South Western Railway (SWR) to provide free Wi-Fi connectivity. BSNL is offering the service in association with QuadGen . Suresh Angadi released Rs 4 lakh under his MP Local Development Area Fund for the project.
Inaugurating the service at the railway station on Saturday, Angadi asked the service providers to provide the best internet access to commuters. “Currently, more than 1 crore reservation is done through the internet. Hence, it will be useful to rail commuters for booking and other purposes,” he said.
Of the seven A category railway stations under Hubballi division, the one at Hubballi will be the second to get Wi-Fi hotspot next month. Seven other railway stations in the division – Dharwad, Londa , Ballari , Hospet in Karnataka and Vasco da Gama in Goa will get the facility in a phased manner in the next six months, officials sources said.
Deepak Tayal, senior general manager, telecom, BSNL, Belagavi, said that the hotspot was part of a public-private partnership initiative across the country. Registered user can use up to 200MB of data per day. He said that similar hotspots have been proposed in different parts of Belagavi city under the Smart City Project. Puneeth RC, assistant divisional railway manager, MLA Sanjay Patil and senior railway officials were present.
