More Indians than before are hitting the mobile phone for Internet searches, and the searchers are not the usual suspects—older people, women, users based outside metros and tier 1 cities crowd their ranks, according to a report out on Thursday which hailed the rise of a “new wave of user.”
Many of the users want Internet services in languages other than English, and they are making their searches on affordable handsets equipped with ordinary 2G services, said the Year in Search 2015 report by search giant Google Inc.
“From planning holidays, to decorating homes, to watching their favourite videos online, mobile internet is beginning to influence, and in many cases define, an Indian user’s first experience online -- and brands are taking notice,” said Rajan Anandan, vice-president and managing director, Google India, in the report that analysed Internet trends based on what Indians searched on Google and watched on YouTube.
“It is exciting to see, for example, how Search interest for cars is seeing a strong correlation to actual sales, just as the extent of popularity of a movie’s trailer on YouTube is strongly correlating with its box-office collections.”
About 60% of all shopping queries, 50% of travel-related queries and about 41% of job-related queries came from mobiles.
To be sure, this data is representative only of those that used Google’s search platform. While there are other search platforms available, Google-owned Android (which has its search inbuilt into the handset) is the most popular operating system for over 200 million mobile Internet users in India.
Video site YouTube also saw over 60% of views coming from mobile phones in 2015, with women making up 40% of users.
Consumers sought out easy-to-use and simple services and products online. One in four users bought auto insurance online and app services by telecom providers saw a 170% year on year growth in search queries.
Some of the big trends from 2015 include: a massive 250% y-o-y increase in wearable electronic devices such as fitness tracking accessories; a 50% increase in online dating and a 55% rise in grocery-related searches.
There was a 173% growth in searches for carpooling and ride sharing and an 86% growth in searches for cab services.
“It is easy to say that mobile was the biggest trend of the year in the rapidly changing world of technology, and although we’ve been talking about mobile for a while, it’s only in 2015 that everyone came to terms with the enormity of the impact mobile is having in India,” said Anandan.
Google said over 300 million Indians are using the Internet and six million new users are joining every month, bringing India at “front and center” of the global Internet ecosystem. By 2017, India will cross the 500 million Internet users mark and over 400 million Indians will have the power of smartphones in their hands.
“These next 100 to 200 million Internet users, however, will be different from those we see online today,” said Anandan, pointing to the rise of the new wave of Indian Internet users.
