Not alternative but the best messaging app is Telegram. The only popular feature missing in Telegram is the Status/Stories tab.

I just wish Hike stay and continue its journey as India's own messenger. Signal App is trending on twitter with some paid tweets. Where as Telegram is Good but not trust worthy. They do have Apple Music/Apple TV on Android. And this is the perfect opportunity to bring iMessages to Android and Windows! They can charge for it, like the initial days of WhatsApp! And they already have a huge user base of iMessages!

If you are okay to forego groups with 150+ members, then Signal..

Honestly, Signal's encryption is world class, open source and also in use by other messaging apps as well. WhatsApp also uses signal's end-to-end encryption for chats...
