WhatsApp has reportedly been the target of a new scam which deceives users into disclosing personal information.

According to BT, the links appear to come from your friend but instead lead you to a discount page which then asks for your personal details.

Unassuming users are then led to a fake website which infects your phone with malware, allowing the scammer to obtain sensitive information.

WhatsApp's popularity has exploded in recent years. It now has nearly one billion users worldwide and has become a key target for scammers.

Speaking to This Is Money, David Emm, principal security researcher at Kaspersky Lab, an internet security and anti-virus software company, says the scam operates in a range of languages.

"We have noted that this WhatsApp scam has been actively circling for some time. It 'speaks' several languages so the attacks can be customised for each market.

"The message convinces the user to forward the message to 10 contacts, so he/she can receive a certain promotion (such as 5 discount at Starbucks, Zara etc)."

WhatsApp's growing popularity in Europe and India has meant it has gained scammers' attention in recent months.

Just last month, security experts warned there was a scam posing as a WhatsApp update which had the capacity to access and retrieve banking apps on your mobile phone.

BlackBerry is exploring alternatives to make working on BBM, its messaging platform, "more convenient and fun" to support users after rival WhatsApp announced to stop its support to Canadian firm's operating system from later this year.
WhatsApp, which has over a billion users globally, had earlier this week said it will end support for BlackBerry phones and those powered by Nokia's Symbian operating system later this year.
"BlackBerry is committed to our BlackBerry 10 operating system, and we work closely with developers to create and deploy solutions to bring apps to our consumer and enterprise fans. We continue to invest in the BlackBerry 10 platform and will introduce several key security updates this year," BlackBerry said in a statement.
It added that the company is "actively exploring alternatives for BlackBerry users once support of WhatsApp Messenger for BBOS and BlackBerry 10 ends in late 2016".
"Users of BlackBerry PRIV, which runs on Android, will not be impacted...While the app landscape continues to evolve, our commitment to BlackBerry10 and our developers is unwavering," it said.
BlackBerry, in its blog, said it is building more features into BBM, especially on the security front.
"We're evolving group and multi-person chats. We're making BBM Protected an even better messaging solution for security-conscious organisations. We're giving you ever more privacy and security by allowing you to control previews. We're also working to make BBM more convenient and more fun," it said.
Stating that messaging continues to be one of the most popular ways to communicate, BlackBerry said it will keep evolving the app and the services within it.
Once exclusive to BlackBerry devices, the company made BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) available on rival platforms of Android, iOS and Microsoft in 2013.
As of March 2014, it had about 85 million monthly users and around 113 million global registered users. The move was aimed at offering the struggling smartphone maker get newer avenues for monetisation.
WhatsApp said it had made the "tough decision" to end support for BlackBerry (including BlackBerry 10), Nokia S40, Nokia Symbian S60, Android 2.1, Android 2.2 and Windows Phone 7.1.
Citing the reason, the Facebook-owned company said when it was set up, about 70 percent of smartphones sold were powered by operating systems offered by BlackBerry and Nokia.
However, mobile operating systems offered by Google, Apple and Microsoft account for 99.5 percent of sales today.
WhatsApp, which competes with the likes of Hike, Viber and LINE as well, is very popular in emerging nations like Brazil, India and Russia.

You may soon be able to dial landline or mobile phone numbers from popular internet apps such as Skype, WhatsApp or Viber, following clearance for inter-connect agreements between internet service providers and telecom operators by an inter-ministerial panel of the government on Monday.

The move may result in substantially lower charges for voice calls (which would be billed as per data usage), though poor quality of internet networks - a general irritant with broadband services in many parts of the country - could be a dampener.

You may soon be
able to dial landline or mobile
phone numbers from popular
internet apps such as Skype,
WhatsApp or Viber , following
clearance for inter-connect
agreements between internet
service providers and telecom
operators by an inter-ministerial
panel of the government on
Monday.

The move may result in
substantially lower charges for
voice calls (which would be
billed as per data usage), though
poor quality of internet networks
- a general irritant with
broadband services in many
parts of the country - could be a
dampener.

A part from being a consumer-
friendly move, the decision to
allow inter-connect agreements
between ISPs and telecom
operators will be a shot in the
arm or Mukesh Ambani's
Reliance Jio Infocomm, which
will soon begin services across
the country . Reliance Jio plans
to offer voice over its 4G
network. Following the panel's
clearance, its subscribers will be
able to terminate calls on the
landline or mobile networks of
any service provider ranging
from MTNL or BSNL's fixed lines
o the mobile numbers on Air el,
Vodafone or Idea Cellular.

"The move has been cleared by
the inter-ministerial elecom
commission and groundwork to
get it going will start soon," an
official source said.

Sector regulator Trai had already
recommended the measure to
allow inter-connect for voice
over internet protocol (or VoIP)
services, and this had been
pending with the telecom
ministry .Changes will be made
to licence conditions to allow
inter-connection of IP (internet
protocol) networks.

"The government has removed a
major policy hurdle to allow
interplay between internet and
non-internet net works," Hemant
Joshi, telecom analyst at
Deloitte, said.Prashant Singhal,
the telecom sector lead at Ernst
& Young, said the move would
have a major impact on telecom
industry . "This is big...and can
have a substantial impact on
operator revenues.Data calls are
always cheaper than voice
calls."

However, the move while being
beneficial for consumers may
pose a challenge for security
agencies. "Monitoring internet
voice calls will be a big
challenge and pose security
risks," an industry official said,
requesting anonymity. A major
issue that now needs to be sorted
out by Trai is to address the
issue of termination charges that
internet companies will need to
pay to mobile operators for
transferring their calls on their
networks.

Trai officials have indicated that
they will set inter-connection
charges for internet calls after
the government allows
amendments to the Unified
Licence framework. "Work on
this will start soon and Trai will
look into the matter," the official
source said. Internet calling has
gained substantially in traffic as
data speeds get better and
smartphones sales increase.
While internet calling is still at
an early stage in domestic
calling, it is very popular for
people who travel
internationally.
