Vodafone has disclosed the customer figure of its German IPTV platform, Vodafone TV, which since launch in mid-February 2011 has so far acquired 25,000 subscribers with 300 to 400 new customers being added each day.
Vodafone initially opted for a low-key launch of its TV offering, Fritz Joussen, CEO of Vodafone Germany, announced in Düsseldorf. "But with this kind of customer response we will take this product into an offensive." A large-scale marketing campaign will commence in Q3 2011. 1,000 or more new customers per day would be "easily achievable" then, predicts Joussen.

Market leader Deutsche Telekom currently reaches 1.3 million customers with its IPTV platform Entertain while Telefónica subsidiary HanseNet has almost 80,000 customers with Alice homeTV.

In contrast to the sole IPTV offerings of its two competitors, Vodafone TV has opted for a hybrid solution which combines cable, satellite and IPTV reception. In early September 2011, Telekom wants to commence offering Entertain via satellite through a collaboration with SES Astra to expand its reach.

Vodafone TV contains public and commercial TV channels, HD services, thematic channels and foreign-language channels. The platform also features a video-on-demand portal with around 3,000 movies, series, documentaries and other titles.

The hybrid set-top-box (STB) automatically detects which ways of reception are available in each individual household and chooses the best method of reception for the desired content. The system is based on an end-to-end solution provided by technology company NDS.
