Kithuruwan Vithanage, the Sri Lanka batsman, was handed a one-year suspension from all forms of cricket by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on Thursday (July 7) after he was found guilty of misconduct and in breach of the ICC Code of Conduct clause(s) 3.1.9.10 and 3.1.9.11.

According to reports, Vithanage was involved in a late-night brawl last month along with Ramith Rambukwella, after a group of unidentified men attacked the duo. Vithanage had sustained injuries and was admitted to a local hospital in Colombo. Having had a history of misdemeanour, SLC took into account the act and initiated an enquiry.

While the details of his misconduct were not explained, SLC issued a press release after a close-door hearing, stating, "The Disciplinary Committee was presented with written and oral evidence from witnesses to the incident in question and Vithanage was invited to present similar evidence in his defense."

The press release further added, "In consideration of the evaluation of the evidence presented, the Disciplinary Committee has recommended an immediate suspension, specifically drawing attention to the fact that the conduct of Vithanage is 'unacceptable when considering his status as a public figure, and a role model for the youth of Sri Lanka'."

The middle-order batsman, who has played 10 Tests, six One-Day Internationals and three Twenty20 Internationals, can appeal against the decision.
