Following knocks of 167 and 81 in the second Test against England in Visakhapatnam, Virat Kohli, the India Test captain, has moved up 10 spots to achieve a career-best fourth position in the International Cricket Council (ICC) rankings for Test batsmen announced on Tuesday (November 22).
Kohli, the current number one-ranked batsman in Twenty20 Internationals and also the second best in One Day Internationals (ODIs), has achieved a ranking number in the single digits in the Test format for the first time. His previous best ranking in the five-day format was 10th.
Kohli gained 97 points after his Man of the Match winning performance in Vizag and currently trails the second-ranked Joe Root (844) by 22 points.
Cheteshwar Pujara, who scored 119 and 1 in the two innings of the second Test, moved up a spot, to be currently ranked ninth with 768 points. He trails David Warner, who is at the eighth position, by two points.
Meanwhile, Ajinkya Rahane dropped down the ladder, moving down to the 11th position from eighth while Alastair Cook also lost his footing by one position to be currently ranked 10th.
Jonny Bairstow, who scored 53 and 34 not out in England's 246-run loss, climbed four spots to reach the No. 12 position. Ben Stokes's scores of 70 and 6 helped him gain five slots to occupy the 28th spot.
Steven Smith, the Australia captain, continues to top the batsmen's rankings with 897 points while Kane Williamson holds onto his number three spot with 838 points. Hashim Amla retained his fifth spot with 809 points while Younis Khan (790 points) moved down two places to sixth.
Mohammed Shami, the India pacer, also achieved a career-best ranking in the list for Test bowlers, moving up five places to get to the 21st position. Ravindra Jadeja also achieved ascendancy in the rankings for bowlers, moving up a spot to be placed sixth.
For England, Stuart Broad (up one place) and Moeen Ali (up four places), have achieved fifth and 23rd positions, respectively while James Anderson (850 points) held on to his fourth spot.
Ravichandran Ashwin, who bagged eight wickets to help India take a 1-0 lead, is still the No. 1 ranked Test bowler with 895 points. Rangana Herath, the second-ranked Test bowler, trails Ashwin by 28 points. Dale Steyn, with 852 points, is still ranked No. 3.
