New telcom companies, Uninor and MTS, continue to attract fresh subscribers

NEW DELHI: New telecom companies, Uninor and MTS, whose licences were cancelled by the Supreme Court on February 2, 2012, continued to attract new subscribers.

Uninor added 2.49 million customers in January, largest amongst all GSM operators for that month, according to figures released by the Cellular Operators Association of India ( COAI). Uninor's figures are 7,00,000 more than Idea cellular's, which added 1.7 million subscribers in January.

"In our 13 commercial circles in 2011, the highest number of subscribers chose Uninor. We are satisfied to see that this strong preference continues into 2012 as well. It is our intention to continue competing as a mass market mobile service and ensure that the Indian mobile users continue to benefit from this competition," Uninor said on Friday.

Uninor has more than 38.7 million customers in India. The telco has announced that it will dump its existing joint venture partner Unitech and form a new company in India to continue operations in India.

Sistema Shyam Teleservices that operates under the MTS brand said it had added more than 1,43,000 customers in January taking its total customer base to nearly 15.2 million. The telco is the only player amongst service providers in India that offers exclusively CDMA services.

GSM operators including Bharti Airtel and Vodafone added a total of 8.44 million subscribers in January, taking the total number of GSM subscribers to 648.08 million, the association said.

Bharti Airtel continues to be the market leader with more than 27% market share. It added more than 1.3 million customers in January taking its total to nearly 177 million customers. Vodafone Essar added more than 8,55,000 customers to take its total to more than 148.6 million customers and market share to nearly 23%.

Videocon registered an addition in its subscriber base after months of continuously loosing customers.

The telco, whose licences have been cancelled as well, added 405,000 customers to take its total to 5.8 million.

Etisalat DB also added more than 22,000 customers while Loop added more than 10,000 customers.
