The year 2016 has been one hell of a ride for Indians. From beating the odd-even transport woes to struggling through cashless payments, we have seen it all. Now as the year draws to a close, Uber has released a list of top trends of 2016 in India. “We found some very interesting trends in 2016, including, that of a rider in Bangalore, India, who took almost 3,135 trips, making it the highest number of rides taken by a single rider, globally,” said Amit Jain, President, Uber India and South Asia.
Uber analyzed the riding behavior and destination preference of Indians and revealed that riders across the country hailed the service most on Fridays and Saturdays, days when after-office meet ups are planned or when simply to beat the blues after a hectic week at work, one unwinds by not driving in the country’s maddening traffic. The service has further bifurcated users’ cab-hailing behavior based on the cities they live in. Those based in Delhi availed Uber rides the most on Fridays between 9:00AM and 10:00AM, while Mumbaikars used the service most frequently on Fridays between 5:00PM and 6:00PM, and users based in Bangalore used it the most on Saturdays between 6:00PM and 7:00PM.
In an interesting revelation, the most Uber trips taken this year were 4,338 trips by an Indian driver in Bangalore. This was followed by 3,775 trips by a driver partner in New Delhi and 3,624 trips by a driver partner in Mumbai. Additionally, the most number of trips taken by a single rider were 3,135 trips in Bangalore, which comes to about eight trips a day, and is the highest number globally.
For Indian riders, the US remains the top favorite travel destination, followed by the UK, Singapore, UAE, and Malaysia. The company further revealed that visitors from over 70 countries of the world prefer hailing an Uber ride when they are in India.
As Uber celebrates its third anniversary in the India which is the largest market outside of the US, the company introduced a number of new features and added new services in a bid to better compete rival Ola. In 2016, Uber launched its services in two new cities including Lucknow and Ludhiana, taking the total number of cities to over 30. Other than introducing its ride-hailing service in new cities, it brought its internationally popular services such as UberPool to four new Indian cities including Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Chennai, and Kolkata. It further launched some India-first products such as uberDost, Dial an Uber, UberFleet, and more.
