The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is finalizing its recommendations on the process of blocking phones that have been reported as lost or stolen. TRAI hopes to do this based on a handset's IMEI number, something that's unique to each phone.

The biggest roadblock on TRAI's path is the fact that there are plenty of cheap Chinese handsets in the market with duplicate IMEI numbers. There is still no system in place to identify such handsets and TRAI has promised that they are investigating a solution.

Currently, if you lose a handset all you can do is get the SIM blocked but the phone can still be used. If TRAI's plans kick off, it will be a great way to prevent misuse of data stored on lost phones.
