Last night Microsoft announced that it would be bringing some brand new features for developers in the form of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update SDK. The same will also be arriving in the form of an update for Windows 10 users as well.
Microsoft EVP, Windows and Devices Group, Terry Myerson announced that the software giant will be releasing Windows 10 Anniversary Update to all Windows 10 customers for free this summer.
So what’s all the fuss about? Well, there are many new features that come with the big update, but let’s sift through them and focus on just the four most important ones that should matter to consumers.
1. Windows Hello will offer biometric security for apps
Microsoft claims that Windows Hello will now offer enterprise-grade security. Security apart, this also means that signing into your Windows 10 devices becomes a lot easier with the upcoming update. Even more convenient is the fact that Hello now works with Microsoft’s Edge browser; meaning users will soon be able to sign in using Hello on supported sites without the need to remember and enter a password. With the new update Hello will also work with supported apps as well.
2. Windows Ink
An API coming to developers, Windows Ink will allow users to interact in a more natural way with both native and third-party apps. Ink basically allows apps on Windows 10 to understand your stylus inputs even better, letting you do more than just jot down notes and scribble out equations. Microsoft will be integrating Windows Ink into its own apps like Maps, Microsoft Edge and Office. Adding the API also takes up very little time and effort according to Microsoft, so here’s to hoping that many third-party developers will adopt the same in their apps.
3. Cortana finds its way into more apps
With the upcoming update, Cortana gets smarter than before. The quirky assistant will now be able to buy you lunch and even arrange for transportation to that meeting in a restaurant that exists in your calendar. Apart from being available in over a 1,000 apps, Cortana will also be available right on your lock screen. It will be able to take requests for common tasks without the need to unlock your PC. More importantly, the assistant works across devices (and even platforms) so you can continue completing tasks on your Android smartphone if you started off on your Windows 10 desktop. Pretty cool, eh? Even cooler is the fact that developers can integrate Cortana’s learning for use in proactive actions that will help them deliver better and timely services to users.
4. More support for games and a unified Windows Store
Gaming certainly gets a push in the upcoming update for Windows 10 and there were plenty of announcements related to it at day one of Build 2016. Cortana, apart from being available everywhere else, will also be available on the Xbox One. What this means is that gamers will be able to interact with Cortana and find new games, challenges and even get tips and tricks at certain levels. As for the Windows Store, it will now offer a unified experience for both customers and developers. Customers will now be able to see Xbox content in the Windows Store while devs benefit from being able to reach out to new customers.
