Times Internet to launch video-streaming service

Times Internet Limited (TIL) is planning to launch a video-streaming service that will offer premium content, like films and television shows, to Indian consumers through the web.

The service, BoxTV, will be available on computers, tablets and smartphones, Satyan Gajwani, director ( new media) at the Times Group, said here on Friday. He was speaking at Ad-Tech, a three-day event on digital marketing.

Video-streaming services like Hulu and Netflix, which are highly popular in the US, are not available in India.

In his keynote address titled "The evolution of content, commerce and entertainment in digital world", Gajwani said that in the coming years content producers in India would face an immense challenge in working out a cohesive and comprehensive digital media strategy.

He said that the digital landscape was fragmented as platforms like iOS, Android and Windows vied for consumers' attention. "One way to deal with this complexity and offer a unified experience to consumers on laptops, smartphones and tablets will be to use HTML5 to build web-based apps so that they work on all devices."

The Times Group, he said, was catering to the requirements of new-age consumers by taking into account the pre-eminent role the social media had come to play. He cited the example of www.gaana.com, which not only allows the streaming of music but also helps users see what their friends are listening to. After just four months of its launch, the website became the top music-streaming service in India.
