At the MWC 2014 earlier this year, Whatsapp were present and their CEO was just fresh from the 19 billion USD deal with Facebook. At the event, Whatsapp discussed their post Facebook acquisition plans and they also mentioned that they will be introducing VoIP calls in Q2 2014. According to an Italian blog, they were able to get their hands on the latest Whatsapp app with support for voice calls.

They have posted screenshots taken from Whatsapp for iOS that supports voice calls. According to their report, you will be able to make calls by opening the Whatsapp chat and clicking on the call button. You can do the same in the current version, but it will place a regular call. In the upcoming version of Whatsapp, you will be able to make a VoIP call through Whatsapp via 3G or WiFi.

When the call is in progress, you will see a screen something like this.

There is a clear indication that this is a Whatsapp call clearing indicating that you will not be billed for this. Also you can mute, put the call on speaker or go to the Whatsapp chat screen from the on call screen. In addition to this major feature update, the update will also come with a camera icon just before the voice note option making it very easy to send photos or videos on the go.

Whtsapp voice call feature will destroy telecom operators, as ppl will only use internet for calling, and not use normal calling, thus reducing their profits. :c

Thats right but on other face Operators may get more users of their internet packs ..

agreed... these days data speeds are slow.
Even the 3G speeds, arent actually 3G. These ops. are fooling all, by terming it as 3G, but actually it isnt 3G. :dodgy

We cud see better data speeds, with higher value packs soon.

No problem for telco. Because you need to have 3G or 4G for VoIP. So

1. They will increase data tariff for 3G & 4G

2. 3G or 4G has very limited coverage. So majority of people cannot use VoIP.

I am using airtel 3g bro and its really fast in downloading and surfing

I dont think telecom operators will loose anything.. there are a number of apps through which you can make VOIP calls. Tango, viber, kakavoo are few popular ones in market. In india we do not have a strong 3G or 4G network so all these features will not be a hit as of now and still we will have to depend on the cellular network for voice calls as voice clarity in the VOIP with the current 3G would not be that clear. maybe with WIFI when you are home you can use these VOIP calls but not anywhere.
