In an attempt to attract customers, firecrackers christened after popular social media platforms have been introduced in the market for Deepavali season this year.

There are more than 800 firework units in Virudhunagar district, which is the major hub for cracker manufacturing in the country, and where manufacturers constantly strive to bring in innovations every year. With only a month left for Deepavali, manufacturing of crackers is in full swing.

A Madasamy, who owns Sridhara Fireworks at Alamarathupatti near Sivakasi taluk in Virudhunagar district, has introduced fancy crackers named Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, and Skype. The idea came from Madasamy’s relative and unit manager A Pandi.

Speaking to Express, Pandi said that when they were planning to introduce a new variety of crackers, he suggested naming the crackers after the social media to attract youth. The Suparnaa brand has introduced Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, Hike, Skype and Selfie varieties of crackers.

Explaining the speciality of the new variety of crackers, Pandi said, “Usually in a normal fancy cracker, a single shot goes up in the sky and forms different designs. But the new variety has seven shots going up into the sky at once and forming a shape like that of a big flower, giving a beautiful effect. These fancy crackers come in different sizes such as 1.5 inches, two inches, three inches and 3.5 inches. The prices range from Rs 250 to Rs 750.”
