One of the coolest upgrades that came with the new Apple iOS 10 was the improvements to its iMessage app that includes animations, stickers, confetti, third-party app integration. In fact, the iMessage app now has its own App Store, which comes with a wide range of apps supporting the revamped messaging app. While there are a hoard of apps for iMessage on the store, a hilarious new app called Phoneys, is trending. The app lets you prank your friends by sending stickers that look exactly like iMessage text bubbles, confusing them to think they sent you those messages. Using the new layering feature in the updated version of iMessage, these stickers can be placed on top of your friend’s message to make it look like they texted these self-deprecating statements to you.

What really makes this app clever and different, is using the layering feature. Essentially, in iOS 10, iMessage lets users place stickers on top of incoming text messages, photos, GIFs or even other stickers. The idea behind the layering feature is that you could react to a text with a sticker, you could decorate an incoming photo. However, till now not everyone really understands how these layered stickers work in iOS 10 , which gives Phoneys users the edge to pull the prank till people really figure it out.

The app is paid, and is available in India app store for Rs 60. To use the app, just download and install the Phoneys app from the iMessage App Store, choose the friend you want to prank, and then zero in on a text message you want to change. From the keyboard options, scroll through to find the Phoney stickers you want to replace that message with, and then just simply drag it on top of the original text. There are a range of these stickers to choose from like “you’re my hero” or “how could I have been so wrong” or “how do you always look so amazing”, they are just perfect to put words in your friends mouth.

Adam Howell, the designer of the Phoneys app, posted his idea on Twitter, and has since received a great response. Below are some of the user reactions to the app.

I’ve gotten a LOT of support emails today from people who are totally confused by how iMessage stickers/apps work, how to find the etc.

Having said that, while iMessage has gained quite a bit of popularity for its improvements, its popularity is not entirely positive. It was recently revealed that Apple’s iMessage has a major security flaw. Although the messaging app is encrypted, Apple reportedly keeps a log with contact details of whom a user tries to contact, regardless of a message is sent or not. Apple is apparently also recording users’ IP addresses, which could be shared with any law enforcement agency if presented with a valid
warrant.

Other than that, some weeks ago, the built-in GIF feature on the iMessage app put Apple in a difficult spot, when it started showing sexual and even racist content. The outrage about the ‘inappropriate’ GIF search on iMessage began when a sexual animation of a My Little Pony character bending over and pulling down her underwear, showed up when the word ‘butt’ was searched.
